Margaret Tuttle Obituary

Margaret Wilharm Tuttle Margaret Wilharm Tuttle (81) died at home on December 31, 2008 after a short illness. Peg was born on January 3, 1927 in Pittsburgh, PA and lived in the east-end suburbs until entering Cornell University in 1944. She was a member of Alpha Phi sorority and received her Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1948. She was married on October 1, 1949 to Raymond E. Tuttle, a Cornell chemical engineer, whose career took them to Pittsburgh, Arcola, IL. Lakeland, FL, the Chicago suburbs of Golf and Glenview, Bakersfield, CA. back to Chicago, then to Weston, MA. before retiring to Hilton Head in 1987. Peg's interests reached out broadly and she could always be counted on to be very well organized and certain to get things done. She was a staunch Republican, working for the election of Ronald Reagan as Governor of California and President of the US and sharing more than one cigarette with Nancy. She was President of the Cornell Club and on the Association House board in Chicago and worked with service charities in both Bakersfield and Weston. Since her childhood she has been a hospital volunteer, including seventeen years at Hilton Head Hospital. She was active in the Episcopal churches where she lived. At All Saints in Hilton Head she was on the Altar Guild, Vestry, was Junior Warden, a Stephen's Minister and member of the Daughters of the King. Very important to her was her seventeen-year job as Editor of the church monthly newsletter, The Pelican's Bill, beginning almost with the founding of the mission church and her many years on the board of All Saints Preschool. For years she was also the cheery voice and smile as a volunteer receptionist at the church. She is survived by her husband of fifty-nine years, Ray Tuttle; her daughters Mrs. Susan T. Dame of Fort Lauderdale, FL ; and Dr. Carolyn Tuttle of Evanston, IL; son Dr. John R.Tuttle of Saratoga Springs, NY; grandson Daniel T. Crane of Chicago IL: and brother John H. Wilharm of Cleveland, OH. She was the heart of her family. As grandmother, mother, wife, sister and daughter, her heart, generosity and compassion will live on in the life of others. A celebration of her life will take place at All Saints Episcopal Church, Hilton Head Island on Monday, January 5th at 2:00 PM. Contributions may be made to one of her favorite interests, the Humane Society of Hilton Head, in thanks for the three wonderful dogs they have provided to her and Ray. The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Ray, Pat and I are very sorry to learn about Peg. Our hearts go out to you and your family. Every time we saw her at All Saints, whether on Sundays or at meetings of some sort, she brought a smile and wisdom to the group. May she rest in peace and rise in glory.
