Max Stein Obituary

Max Stein Max Stein 1916 to 2009 The Little BIG MAN of Life. Max Stein was born in Germany on June 29, 1916. He immigrated to the United States with his mother, Olga, when he was 10 years old. Speaking no English, he was placed in elementary school, several grades below his level. With Max's characteristic determination, in one year he was speaking English fluently and was moved into the fourth grade. This is where he met the love of his life, Betty J. Hutter. Max and Betty were married for over 68 years. Max served in the Army in WWII. He then started his career with Sears Roebuck &Company where once again with focus and determination, he worked his way up from a clerk to becoming a highly respected Senior Executive. During those years, Max and Betty raised three sons and a daughter with selfless devotion. Max and Betty retired to their "dream life" in Hilton Head in 1981. For the next twenty-eight years Max lived every day to the fullest; loving his wife and "his Island". He played golf with a passion he never lost. He played for seventy years, with his last game a few short weeks ago at the age of 92. He devoted himself to growing in his Christian faith and to his Christian family at Christ Lutheran Church. Max was recognized as Charity's Little BIG MAN for organizing the Hilton Head Mercedes-Benz Golf Tournament for twenty years, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for Hilton Head Hospital Auxiliary and nursing scholarships. Max treated every person he met and those that he already knew with sincere care and compassion. His joy for life and unending sense of humor was showered on all those around him. He inspired people of all ages to achieve their best in all life pursuits. He was a motivational force to many who attribute their achievements and successes to his inspirational "push" and his own principled example. Max became an icon to all who knew him and all would agree that he truly was….." the little BIG MAN of Life". Max is preceded by his beloved wife, Betty and sons Andrew and Steven. He is survived by his oldest son, Jeffrey and his wife Lily, Jeffrey's children Andrea, Eddy Max and wife Priscilla with their two children Ethan and Emma, Steven and Amanda; his daughter Betty and her husband Ed, and their children Alexandra and Andrew Max; his daughter-in-law Missie and her children Katherine and Kimberly; and finally his dog XAM (Max backwards) who has been adopted by a loving family. Welcome all of Max's family and friends to celebrate his life on Monday, May 11, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church on Hilton Head Island. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations to Max's favorite charity the ECLU World Hunger Appeal. Checks can be sent to Christ Lutheran Church, 829 William Hilton Pkwy, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928 where they will be gathered and forwarded to this charity. The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Max was the best of mankind. He was funny, kind, cheerful, committed, passionate and loyal. His friendship with my father was a joy to witness and I am so very glad I had the opportunity to get to know Max and Betty, too. I will cherish my memories of this wonderful man.

I knew Max, Betty and his family, especially Andy, back in Villa Park Illinois. A wonderful family and I wish them all peace.

My friendship with Max goes back many years. We met when his grandchildren - Andrea, Eddie, Mandy and Steven - were small children. My children, Calder and Nancy Kay grew up with his grandchildren on "our island," Wrightsville Beach. However, Max and "his island" continue be close to our hearts. Max put a golf club in my son's hand for the first time as well as showed wonderful hospitality to all of us during our visits. We had great times together with he and Betty at many various family gatherings. Our thoughts are with each of you for this great loss.

Max was a major reason we have enjoyed Hilton Head. He went to lunch with our family after church on Palm Sunday. Our children and grandchildren all said -"What a great guy!"-We agree.
