Michael Weingarten Obituary

Michael Weingarten
May 1, 2023
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina - Michael Weingarten, 77, passed away in a car accident on May 1, 2023 in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Michael is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janet Weingarten, his children, Nicole Zussman (spouse Ron Zussman) and Matt Weingarten (spouse Katka Petrikova), and his grandchildren Noah and Max Zussman and Sarah and Phineas Weingarten. He is also survived by his brothers Barry and Howie Weingarten and his sister-in-laws Randy Kurjan and Martha Hughes and brother-in-law David Kurjan.
Mike was born in Philadelphia, PA and met his wife, Janet, the love of his life, when they were 14 years old and sat next to each other in 9th grade English class. They started dating in 10th grade and married a month after their College Graduation. They settled in the Washington DC Metro area where he began his career at IBM. His job eventually took the family to England where they were introduced to a life of travel and adventure. Mike lived life to its fullest, loved to tell a story and laugh at his own jokes. He enjoyed nothing better than sharing in a delicious meal with family and friends and always wanted to learn about what others were doing. A true family man, Mike was the patriarch of the extended family whose favorite holiday was Thanksgiving where he loved carving the turkey and bringing everyone together for lots of love and laughter. His pride and joy were his grandchildren who adored spending time with their Pop-Pop.
Mike and Janet semi-retired to Hilton Head, South Carolina where he embarked on a second career with Learning Tree International as well as becoming involved in multiple volunteer activities including Treasurer of Backpack Buddies. He was deeply involved with the Beth Yam synagogue where he served on many committees and was President and Treasurer. Mike built a large community of friends wherever he was, and enjoyed playing golf, card games, and hosting a party. He was a master gardener who never tired of puttering around the yard taking care of his plants and flowers.
Mike was buried in Hilton Head on May 4, 2023. The family has requested donations to Backpack Buddies of Hilton Head or Volunteers in Medicine Clinic.

I was so sorry to hear about Mike's passing. I will always be indebted to him for rehiring me back to IBM in 1977 and being such a great boss. This allowed me to spend the next 30+ years as an IBMer and I owe it all to him. And as I was new to Montgomery Village back then he was also a wonderful help in getting Bob and I get settled into the community. He was a great guy and I am glad to know that he found a varied and active life after IBM. My thoughts are with Janice and his family.

I worked with Mike for many years at Learning Tree, and he was everything you could ask for from an instructor - terrific teacher, easy to work with, always willing to help in an emergency, and just an all-around decent person who was the consummate professional at all times. By my count he taught nearly 200 classes, which means he helped the careers of several THOUSAND working professionals in a positive way. It's a small group of instructors who can say that. This is a part of Mike's legacy that his family can be extremely proud of.
