Nancy Schilling Obituary

Nancy Lynne Schilling

February 1, 1952 - December 24, 2024

Okatie, South Carolina - Nancy Lynne Schilling, 72, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2024, ending her courageous battle following multiple strokes. Born on February 1, 1952 in New York City to Dr. Frederick and Betty Schilling, Nancy was the eldest child of eight siblings. She grew up in the picturesque towns of Old Westbury and East Hampton on Long Island, NY. After attending Hanover College in Indiana, she lived in Kentucky and California. Nancy and her former spouse resided in south Florida, where their children Michael, Kristin, and Amanda were born.

In 1985, Nancy and her family embarked on a new venture developing Schilling Boathouse on Hilton Head Island, SC. She was dedicated to managing the marina and restaurant, showcasing her expertise and commitment to the boating community. Nancy's passion for the marine industry led to the creation of "The Atlantic Cruising Club," a comprehensive guide for East Coast boaters from Maine to the Bahamas. In 1993, Nancy joined her husband Edward Modzelewki's consulting firm, collaborating with the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium to establish the South Carolina Marine Association, serving as president from 1997-2000.

Beyond her professional achievements, Nancy was actively involved in various community organizations. Driven by her love for the Lowcountry, Nancy founded Friends of the Rivers in 2001 to champion the protection of its unique environment and waterways. Over the next ten years, she educated residents, business leaders, and government officials on water resource safeguarding and responsibility in preserving the Lowcountry's waterways.

Nancy's greatest achievement was the legacy she built within her family. She was a devoted mother creating a home filled with warmth, laughter, guidance, and support. She found joy in animal adoption and fostering, painting, and traveling abroad with her husband. Over the past two decades, Nancy and Ed would travel to the Grand Teton mountains of Wyoming in a secluded cabin; enjoying hiking, fishing, and collecting artwork and local crafts. During the summer months, they cherished numerous visits to Nantucket with family friends.

Nancy was a beloved mother, grandmother, wife, sister, friend, and pillar of her community. Although we are heartbroken by her departure, we're grateful to have had such an incredible woman in our lives. We miss her beyond measure, and will continue to honor Nancy's legacy of love, generosity, strength and resilience. We love you eternally.

Nancy is survived by her spouse, Edward Modzelewski; children Michael Henry (Lindsay), Kristin Bowers (Joey), Amanda McDonald (Matt), and four beautiful grandchildren Lily, John Henry, Reagan and Camden. In addition, Nancy's siblings Kathy Schilling Colletta (Joe); Tina Haines (Oliver); Lisa Schilling; Tom Schilling (Mickey); and Mary McGuinness (Rory). She is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Fred & Betty Schilling; and siblings, Betty Schilling and Bill Schilling. In lieu of flowers, donations in Nancy's honor can be gifted to Palmetto Animal League in Okatie, SC.
