Paul Barringer Obituary

Paul Brandon Barringer II Paul Brandon Barringer II, 85, legendary hardwood industry pioneer, business leader, and dedicated family man, died peacefully at his home on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, May 30, 2016. Born in Sumter, South Carolina, August 22, 1930, Paul Barringer will be remembered for his immeasurable generosity, charismatic leadership and as a man who was larger than life. Armed with his oft-repeated stories that never got old, he loved to play tennis and bird hunt with friends and family. His greatest pride were his children and grand-children and his greatest joy, his wife of fifty-nine years. Paul attended Episcopal High School from 1944-1948, and the University of Virginia from 1948-1952. He was very active in many organizations including TILKA, IMP honoring ring society and Zeta Psi fraternity. He was a member of Seven Society. It was his service to the University of Virginia that gave him his greatest satisfaction. It lasted from the day he stepped foot on campus in 1948, until his last Cavalier football game. After receiving a BA degree in 1952, during the Korean War, he enlisted in the USAF as an aviation cadet and served three year in the Naval research labs, and thus begun his lifelong love of flying. In 1955, he joined his father's business, Coastal Lumber Company (est 1937) in Weldon, North Carolina. In 1959, he purchased the Company from his father. Coastal grew to be one of the top 100 privately owned companies in North Carolina, and one of the largest independent wood products companies in the United States. He received the utmost respect and loyalty from his employees for his unwavering support and dedication to them. Mr. Barringer was preceded in death by his parents, Victor Clay and Gertrude Hampton Barringer, a brother, Victor Clay Barringer Jr., and two sisters, Lucy Barringer Yount and Eugenia Barringer Higgins. He is survived by his wife, Merrill Underwood Barringer, three children, Merrill Barringer Light and husband Randy (Hilton Head Island, SC), Victor Clay Barringer II and wife Turner (Charlottesville, VA), Hampton Barringer Luzak and husband Kevin (New York). His five grandchildren, Paul Barringer Light, Thomas Gray Light, Paul Brandon Barringer III, Sarah Merrill Barringer, and Wade Hampton Luzak. The family deeply appreciates the loving care and support of Manuel BarrAnco, Shelly and Kenny Tensley, and Domaine Dailey. The Memorial service will be held at the University of Virginia Chapel, 200 McCormick Road, Charlottesville, Virginia, Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., with The Rt. Reverend Christopher Fitz Simons Allison presiding. There will be a private interment. I worked for Coastal Lumber Company for 41 years. Mr.Barringer always made an effort to come by my office when he was in to speak & ask how things were going. I always felt more like family than an employee. I admired & respected him so much. I still think of him very often. He gave a young 20 year old woman a chance for a wonderful career. I will never forget him.

I am sorry to learn of Mr. Barringer's passing. He and Coastal Lumber are and will always mean something special to me due to his relationship to my father, Homer Jordan, and as an integral part of my early life in Weldon, N.C.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news. Mr. Barringer was always so kind to me. He gave this small town girl a wonderful career in the Lumber Industry, a job that I truly loved. We felt more like family than employees. I will never forget him. My prayers are with the family.
