Paul Dexter "Doze" Sanders
February 23, 1956 - June 16, 2021
St. Helena Island, South Carolina - Paul Dexter Sanders, known as "Doze" amongst his friends passed on June 16, 2021. He departed in his sleep at the home he'd built and lived in on St. Helena for the last thirty three years. Born February 23rd, 1956 to Robin "Ping" and Gail Sanders in Savannah, GA he was the second of six children. Paul was a man of the lowcountry who loved life on the sea islands, whether it be farming, fishing, hunting, shrimping, taking his family out on the boat, or going down the river with friends. He passed his love of the land and the lowcountry down to his children. He grew up on St. Helena Island working on his family's tomato farm. Paul attended Beaufort Academy before a brief stint at the College of Charleston. Already possessing a mind for engineering but realizing that academia wasn't for him, Paul dropped out to purchase and operate a shrimp boat and later to farm on the island. Paul owned and captained shrimp boats, spent years operating tractors on his tomato farm, driving the fields in a pickup (usually at a stately pace of 10mph), even holding a solo pilots license. Despite years operating a variety of vehicles and machinery Paul was regarded as one of the worst drivers and navigators in Beaufort by his friends and family. He also was the type of man who would give you the shirt off his back if you were in need, no questions asked. Everyone he met was touched by his caring and his ability to make you feel important. He was a father, a big brother, and a friend. Paul is preceded by his parents and his brother Christopher Robin Sanders. He is survived by his sons Miles and Robin, daughters M.E. and Wesley, and his four remaining siblings, Scott Sanders, Cathy Bridgers, Tom Sanders and Sallie Holland. The Sanders family would like to extend special gratitude to Mr. Miles Murdaugh; for his unerring generosity and kindness. The family of Paul will hold a service at the Parish Church of St. Helena Thursday June 24th at 11am. A reception will shortly follow. Paul has now found the peace that was so elusive in life. In lieu of flowers the family has asked for donations to be made to the Children's Craniofacial Association and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charleston.
