Rebecca Wight Obituary

Aiken, SC REBECCA CARTER WIGHT, 89, formerly of Beaufort, widow of Franklyn C. Wight, died July 20, 2010, in Aiken Regional Medical Center. Her funeral mass will be held on Monday, July 26, at 10:00am at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Beaufort National Cemetery with military honors. Mrs. Wight was born on April 17, 1921, in Jasper County, a daughter of the late John D. Carter and Estelle Tison Carter. Rebecca served in the United States Navy during WWII. She was stationed in Washington, DC where she met Franklyn C. Wight. After receiving her religious instruction from Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, she and Franklyn were married in St. Peter's Catholic Church in November 1945. She was the beloved mother to six children, Helen W. Pawley (William), of Columbia, SC, John D. Wight (Constance), Thomas F. Wight, Patricia W. Rainsford (Albert) all of Edgefield, SC, Carol W. Robinson (Beryl) of Beaufort and Martha W. Whitaker of Columbia, SC. She is also survived by her sister Elizabeth Carter Coon of Aiken, SC, 11 Grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews who loved her very much. She was a Master Gardener, life time member and former president of the Beaufort Garden Club, member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of the Society of the Daughters of the American Colonists. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, a member of the Catholic Women's Organization and was honored as St. Peter's Catholic Woman of the year.
