Robert Chell

January 22, 1943 - March 5, 2024

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina - Dr. Robert M. Chell, "Bob", born January 22, 1943, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2024. He is survived by his devoted wife, Beverly, whom he married nearly 60 years ago. Although Robert and Beverly did not have children, they shared a rich life together.

Robert's academic journey included earning a B.A. degree from Penn State University and obtaining a Ph.D. in Industrial Psychology from New York University. His passion for education led him to a fulfilling career as Professor and head of the Psychology Department at Fairleigh Dickinson University, leaving a lasting impact on countless students.

His multifaceted career extended beyond academia, encompassing a thriving consulting practice. Together with his distinguished role as a Professor at Fairleigh Dickenson University, he lent his expertise to numerous large and medium sized companies in the New York metropolitan area. Notably, his services were sought by enterprises like Allied Signal, where he made significant contributions.

Bob's ability to bridge the worlds of academia and practical industry applications showcased his versatility and dedication to advancing the field of Industrial Psychology.

Bob's commitment extended to the communities in which he lived, including serving on the Board of Trustees of the College of the Desert and of My Blue Dots, when he lived in California, and the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, near his home in South Carolina. He also served on the Board of the Smithsonian Education Center in Washington D.C.

Bob was an inveterate traveler, having visited numerous places on every continent except Antarctica. Cruising was his favorite mode of travel.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, reflecting his compassionate nature and his desire to support those in need. www.keithfuneral.com

I worked as Bob’s secretary at Fairleigh Dickinson University in the early ‘80’s when he was the Chairman of the Psychology Department. I was a young newlywed at the time, and Bob’s advice and humor, as well as his clear love for people, made him a delight to work with. Rest in peace.

Bob was an amazing man, we had many morning conversations over coffee. I sincerely enjoyed the company of Bob & Beverly. He was as genuine as a man could be, someone to look up to. My brother and i had the pleasure of being their guest at their home in California and those are memories that will not be forgotten. He will be missed by many. Prayers to Beverly

Dr. Chell was a leader in the field of Industrial/Organizational Psychology. I was enrolled at FDU in the Masters program in the early 80's. I still remember all the classes I was fortunate to have Dr. Chell as my professor/advisor and the challenging and insightful dialogs we had in class. His encouragement was so important to me and lead me towards a successful 30 plus year career as a Human Resources leader. Thank you Dr. Chell. May you rest in peace.
