Susan Allhusen Obituary

Susan Starr Allhusen

December 25, 1948 - May 6, 2024

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina - Susan Starr Allhusen died in her home on Monday, May 6, 2024, on Hilton Head Island, SC. She was surrounded by the love of her husband, Jim, and their five children, following a long and heroic fight with cancer.

Susan was born on Christmas Day, 1948 in St. Louis, MO to Bill Hoss and Jackie Helle. From a young age, Susan was energetic, bright, kind, and fearless. As a young mother, she created a joyful life for herself and her two young sons, while building a career in computer sales and service.

She married Jim Allhusen in 1983 in Worthington, Ohio. They had an adventurous international life together, living in Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Dubai, Toronto, Philadelphia and Atlanta. Susan was passionate about design and created a beautiful home for her family in every city. The Allhusens retired full-time to Hilton Head in 2013.

Susan was a most wonderful mother and grandmother who cherished her large family more than all else. She was also a remarkable caring friend to many, constantly making new friends while retaining long-term friendships for decades and across continents. She served on the Board of the SC Governor's School Foundation as well as Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, where she was also a volunteer. She was a lifelong learner and loved her local book club of other dynamic women. She was a wise and caring counselor to many, especially young women, generously sharing her experiences with them.

Mrs. Allhusen is survived by her husband and her loving family: her son, Rob Mason, and his wife Jennifer, and their three children, Kate, Brooke, and Dean, of Upper Arlington, Ohio; her son, Brett Mason and his wife Amy and their two sons, Lucas and Asher, of Atlanta, Georgia; her son Eric Allhusen and his wife Chikako, of Dublin, Ohio; her daughter Jennifer Worsley and her husband Brian and their three children, Poppy, Jasper, and Hazel, of Dublin, Ohio; and her daughter Lauren Bullen and her husband Derek and their four children, Ezra, Kairi, Marlowe and Indra, of Hilton Head, SC.

The Allhusens will host two events on Saturday, June 15. There will be a funeral service at All Saints Episcopal Church in Hilton Head at 11 AM, followed by a Celebration of Susan's Life from 1 PM to 4 PM at Sea Pines Country Club. All are most welcome to join the family at both events to honor Susan and celebrate her remarkable life.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to either of Susan's passions: Hospice Care of the Lowcountry or the SC Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities. Islandfuneralhome.com.
