William Culp Obituary

William B.A. Culp, Jr.
August 29, 1943 - August 2, 2022
Beaufort, South Carolina - It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of William B A Culp, Jr. (Bill), 78 of Beaufort, South Carolina on Tuesday, August 2, 2022 after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Born August 29, 1943 in Concord, NC, Bill was the son of Rev. William B A Culp, Sr. and Flonnie Lipe Culp. Bill graduated from Western Carolina University, was a Vietnam Veteran, and taught at West Charlotte High School before becoming the long-time Director of the Board of Elections of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County, NC.
As Director of Elections for about 30 years, Bill focused on expanding voter registration among all residents of Charlotte-Mecklenburg and worked with candidates in a non-partisan way to help them understand how to run a campaign.
Bill was a life-long civic, community and church volunteer. He dedicated time to his beloved neighborhood of Dilworth, his children's schools and sports teams, his church as an elder, choir member and youth volunteer, and delivering meals to house-bound neighbors. After retirement, Bill and his wife Deena moved to Beaufort. Bill continued to deliver meals for another 15 years to people all over Beaufort County through Mobile Meals and through his work at Second Helpings, taking along his grandchildren whenever they could visit. He entertained everyone with his singing, jokes, stories and his service as Santa for family, friends, Alzheimer's Family Services of Greater Beaufort, and the Beaufort Garden Club. Civic service was Bill's avocation for over 50 years.
Bill coached youth sports, and he was an avid fan of the Charlotte Hornets and Charlotte Panthers. Bill loved spending time outdoors with his children and eventually his grandchildren. He enjoyed hiking, camping, teaching his grandchildren to build camp-fires and canoeing. In his youth, Bill performed folk music as one of the "Four Bills" and participated in the civil rights sit-ins at Woolworth's in Greensboro, NC. Bill studied political science at Western Carolina University, where he grew into a lifelong civil rights advocate and met the love of his life.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Deena Owen Culp. He was he beloved father of a daughter, Carrie Culp Abramson (Leigh) and a son, Will Culp (Alli) and the proud grandfather of Josh, Abby, Jamie, Emmaline, Anneliese and Liam. Bill is also survived by his sister, Ellen Culp Turk (the late Arthur Turk) and brother, John Culp (Donna).
Family and friends are invited to join us for a gathering to celebrate Bill's life on Saturday, September 3, 2022 at 3:00 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Beaufort, SC and a gathering with the family afterwards. Memorial Gifts in Bill's name may be made to Alzheimer's Family Services of Greater Beaufort P.O. Box 1514 Beaufort, SC 29901.

Sending warm thoughts and condolences to the Culp Family. I first met Bill in the early 80's when I was new to Charlotte and became a member of CIC (Community Issues Council). Spent many meetings with him and the group. Rest In Peace, Bill.

Uncle Bill was always the one to cheer someone up, I remember my dad(John) and Uncle Bill just having fun going at each other and me laughing so hard it hurt.
He gave me support years ago when I felt like I would never find the right person to spend my life with, sadly he never met my wonderful wife. I know he would've loved her. As he said, it takes someone special to be with someone special.
I'll never forget the countless stories at dinner in the mountains and the endless laughs he brought.
I love you Uncle Bill you will be missed but always remembered by those whose heart you touched
