John Dorsey Obituary

John "Jay" Dorsey, 76
1947 - 2024
Fort Myers, FL - John "Jay" Dorsey, 76, of Fort Myers, Florida entered into eternal rest on August 20, 2024 after a period of declining health. He was the son of the late John "Jack" Dorsey and Genevieve (Bradlee) Dorsey.
Born in Cambridge, MA, Jay was raised in Thomaston, ME before moving to Lynnfield, MA at the age of 15. He attended St. John's Preparatory School and was a graduate of St. Mary's High School in Lynn, MA class of 1966.
Jay was a proud Vietnam veteran who served our country with honor and courage in the Vietnam War. It was then his great honor to have his name engraved on the Veteran's Memorial located in Lynnfield Town Center.
He was an avid sports fan who followed all New England Teams at the high school, college, and professional levels. As a season ticket holder to the Boston Red Sox for over 40 years, Jay never missed an opportunity to show off his treasured ticket to anyone he met. He was employed at the Harp and Bard Restaurant and Pub in Norwood, MA for many years prior to owning and operating the Banner Glass Company in Waltham, MA and Dorsey's Deli in Lynnfield, MA.
In retirement, Jay enjoyed spending time at his family home in Cape Elizabeth, ME and golfing in Fort Myers, FL. He is survived by several cousins, and many lifelong close friends in Florida and New England. Always a jokester, Jay will be fondly remembered for his quick wit and dry sense of humor - Oh, the stories he would tell!
Service Information: Per Jay's wishes, services will be private. Interment will take place in the Sarasota National Cemetery in Sarasota, FL. Arrangements entrusted to Baldwin Brothers Funeral & Cremation Society of Fort Myers, FL. Those who prefer may make donations in Jay's name to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, NY 10306.

When someone had been part of your life for many years, and even when there had been a separation, it´s comforting to look back at all the good times in reflection. Jay was the consummate storyteller. He loved to tell a joke and was particularly skilled at weaving in local color into many of his stories. Heaven help anyone who was the slightest bit naive as this was an entry point for one of Jay´s numerous offerings and the banter could continue for quite awhile thereafter until the victim realized they were being spoofed. Funny, witty, loved his sports teams (Sox & Pats), he could pontificate on any subject that he was interested. Rest in peace friend.

We have known Jay for many years. we played golf in Sarasota, Venice and Fort Myers. Jay had a great sense of humor telling many jokes and taught me all the inappropriate golf language. Jay loved dogs and taught our Molly Airedale many commands and was very affectionate with her. He cried when we had to send her the the rainbow bridge. He will derive more happiness when he meets Sammy and Molly again.

Jay was a kind loving soul and a very selective ladies man. He had no children, however treated my wife and her daughter as his daughters. We did so many things together we will always have Jay in our hearts.

I have known Jay for many many years. We shared Boston College football tickets for several seasons , worked together at Dorsey´s deli and enjoyed our great love of our Labrador retrievers taking them for long walks especially in the fall. Since retiring to Florida and living on the same street in Fort Myers Jay and I enjoyed golfing, eating out, and watching sports at home or at our clubhouse. Since Jays passing there is a deep void in my wife Susan and my life. Michael Brennan
