It is with great sadness that the family of Kevin Cole Costin announces his passing, unexpectedly but peacefully in his sleep of heart failure, just a few weeks after his 53rd birthday. Kevin was the youngest of six Costin children, born to Thomas P. Costin Jr. and the late Rosemary Cole Costin of Nahant. Kevin will forever be remembered, in his hometown of Nahant, for the swimming instruction he gave each summer at his family's home, Egg Rock. Kevin swam competitively throughout his career at Lynn English High School, then attended Harvard University, where he sang in the a cappella group, The Opportunes, and received a BA in Fine Arts. His love of performance (on stage and off) led him to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree from the American Repertory Theater (ART) at Harvard in Cambridge, where he later served as a trustee. While a love of the theater remained forever in his heart, Kevin's career was guided by his profound social conscience. After receiving a Masters Degree in Social Work from Columbia University, Kevin dedicated himself for more than 20 years to programs serving youth and former inmates in New York City. Most recently, Kevin served as executive director of CSEDNY, after developing and leading ComALERT, one of the most innovative criminal justice programs at the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office. ComALERT is a prisoner reentry program that includes substance abuse treatment, job placement and housing services for parolees. Mr. Costin was also an active member of the arts and social services communities in New York and Boston. He served on the Board of Directors of the New York City Anti-Violence Project and CorbinDances, and was an Advisory Board member for the World Of Work track at the Columbia University School of Social Work. Kevin is survived by his father and stepmother, Noel Spinney Costin; siblings, Thomas J. and his spouse Cynthia, RoAnn, Morgan, and Midge Costin and Maura Costin Scalise and her spouse Robert; as well as his many nieces, nephews, and godchildren, who love and admire him. Most of all, to his many friends, family, and partners, Kevin was an original, unforgettable, and irreplaceable force of life. He had the biggest heart, the most infectious laugh, and the best stories anyone ever told. He lived life fully and embraced the uniqueness of everyone he met. His friendship and genuine love will be forever remembered and deeply missed by all. Service information: A celebration of life and his memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 11 a.m. in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 248 Nahant Road, Nahant. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial will be private.
