Carl Gerber Obituary
Carl graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown, where he was membership chairman of the Junior Historian Club and participated in many high school sports. After graduating from high school, Carl attended Lee College in Baytown and the University of Texas in Austin, and served in the U.S. Army. Upon his discharge from the Army, Carl moved to San Diego.
In 1961, Carl and his wife Veleta moved to San Bernardino, where they raised their five children. Carl graduated from San Bernardino Valley College in 1965, and from California State University, San Bernardino, with a degree in psychology in 1969. He began working at Patton State Hospital in 1961 as a psychiatric technician and retired from there as a nursing service coordinator in 1996. Carl was active in coaching baseball and football throughout his children's youth.
During his retirement, Carl was active in the Methodist church, church-sponsored ministries, and various volunteer activities. Carl traveled several times to the Gulf Coast to participate in Hurricane Katrina relief. He participated in the "Cross in my Pocket" and Kairos Prison Ministries, and began his own "Flower Ministry." He was recognized by several charitable organizations and the City of San Bernardino for his volunteer work.
Carl is survived by his wife, Veleta, and his children, Craig, Rochelle Keogh (Robert), Curtis, Stacey Lancaster (Lane), and Cameron; and his grandchildren, Jordan and Lauren Keogh, Travis and Cole Gerber, Madison Lancaster, and Tighe and Maya Gerber. Carl is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Jerry Bates, and his sister Nancy Vickers.
Services for Carl will be held on Friday, May 8th at 1:00 pm at Del Rosa Methodist Church located at 3350 Del Rosa Ave. in San Bernardino, with a private internment to follow at a later date at El Camino Park in San Diego. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to your favorite charity in Carl's name.
