Mrs. Heiple was my first-grade teacher at Vineyard School in Ontario. She was the best teacher I ever had. Each day she would read stories to us, and we got to paint and draw and learn to read and write in her class.
My most vivid memory of her happened when our class was doing a dance during a school performance. Somehow, my shoe came off during the dance. I was so mortified that I ran back to get it and started to cry. Then I ran out the door to escape the humiliation, and as I got close to the road, I heard Mrs. Heiple call out to me: "Pammy!! Come back" She had just turned the corner from our classroom to the walkway and was running toward me. I stopped and turned around and ran toward her. She put her arms around me and hugged me, and both of us cried. It was as if she truly felt my feelings as a small child. I have never felt that kind of compassion and caring from any other teacher.
She helped me in so many ways that day. I felt understood and learned not to feel shame about myself for problems I did not cause. I will always love her and miss her, and I am so lucky that she was my first and very favorite teacher. I ended up becoming a teacher because she taught me how much it allows you to help people. Her life truly mattered in the most important way possible.

I remember your hospitality and generosity to the Alta Loma family during Clark's years at the high school. You and your home were always a delight. May you rest in peace.

I remember CleoBell's cheerful help at my husband's retirement party. She jumped right in and organized and then arranged many bouquets of flowers brought by guests. She always seemed so happy to see me, and I know how much she loved her family.

CleoBell, you were my dear loving friend beginning in 1976 when I first came to Hawthorne School to teach 2nd grade next door to you. Everytime I see a butterfly I will think of you. I will personally carry on your tradition of children's literature, reading to children and teaching them.
