Susan Steiner Obituary

STEINER, Susan Gilmore

Susan Gilmore Steiner, a South Pasadena resident for the last twenty-five years, with a home in Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, México, passed away on Monday, April 9.

An educator and longtime supporter of local art and artists, Dr. Steiner worked as a
university administrator at California State University, Los Angeles, and as Vice President for Research and Sponsored Programs at the Claremont University Graduate School. At both institutions, Dr. Steiner was responsible for securing federal grants, which resulted in the expansion of existing programs and the creation of new ones, such as the Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management and the School of Religion at Claremont. At Cal State L.A., she was instrumental in the funding of the Luckman Fine Arts complex, and a scholarship fund was established in her name.

Her contributions to the larger community went far beyond her professional life, including board memberships on Theatre Forty, PEN Center USA West and Vistamar School; and she generously and tirelessly lent her skills as a professional consultant to small-scale theater projects throughout greater Los Angeles.

Susan Steiner was born in Great Neck, Long Island, on June 10, 1940. She was educated at the Northrup School in Minneapolis and received her undergraduate degree at Wellesley College, where she was a Durant Scholar, in 1961. She held a doctorate in English literature from UC Berkeley and Union Institute and University.

She is survived by her two sons, Edward, of Washington DC, and James, of Pasadena; Edward's wife Karene and their daughter, Zipporah; her brother, Rick Gilmore (wife Judith), of Chevy Chase, MD.; her sister, Linda Viertel (husband Jack) of Tarrytown, New York; and her longtime companion, John Farrell.

I just can't believe it. I enjoyed every minute with Susan & John as their casita renter in the summer of '09. Susan's energy and determination to finish the decor of their lovely home often discussed over the glasses of wine we shared almost every afternoon are indelible memories of a great summer. Rest in peace.
