Costas Tassis Obituary

COSTAS CHARLES TASSIS

1919 - 2010

Costas Charles Tassis, 90, of El Centro passed away on March 3, 2010 of natural causes with his daughter by his side while recuperating from pneumonia at a rehabilitation facility near her home. Loving husband of the late Hazel Ruth Cox Tassis who passed away on December 6, 2008 after 66 years of marriage, his daughter believes a broken heart contributed to the cause of death as Costas continued to grieve the loss of his beloved wife. Costas, known by many as Charles, was born on April 11, 1919 in Manchester, NH to John Tassis and Evelyn Grandbois.
Costas enlisted in the National Guard in 1938. After World War II was declared, he was indicted into the U.S. Army in 1940, training at various bases. He married his wife, Hazel, on December 5, 1942 in Sebastopol, MS before being shipped overseas where his outfit engaged in battles in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was honorably discharged in 1945 when the war ended.
Costas received his Bachelor's of Science Degree with a major in Industrial Education from Mississippi State College in Starkville, MS in 1951 and his Masters of Education Degree in School Administration in 1953.
Beginning in 1951, Costas taught at various high schools before joining the Imperial Unified School District in 1959, retiring in 1989. For most of his 30 years of service with the District, he taught business courses at Imperial High School before accepting the challenge to move to Frank Wright Intermediate School in 1974. Teaching was his passion. Although 70 when he retired, he continued to substitute for two additional years. He always thought he retired too early and felt there were still students who could benefit from his teaching.
Costas loved gardening and was proud that he had the best lawn in the neighborhood. He regularly enjoyed comparative shopping at every grocery store he could find. He belonged to the Retired Teachers Association and Veterans of Foreign War in El Centro, and maintained his Master Mason status with the Grand Lodge in MS. He was a member of Central Baptist Church in El Centro since 1962.
His only child, Deborah Ann and her husband, Wayne Flores of Santa Maria, CA and two sisters, Therese Tassis of Concord, NH and Lorraine Rousseau of Manchester, NH survive Costas.
Funeral services including military honors will be Saturday, March 20 at 10 a.m. at Hems Brothers Chapel in El Centro. Private disposition will occur at a later date.

I, too, was fortunate to have Mr. Tassis for math in 7th and 8th grade. He was tough but I did learn. I often share my experiences in his class with my own students.

Dear Debbie, Even though it has been fifty years since I have seen you or your parents you will forever be like family to me. I will always treasure the memory of your dad just "borrowing me for a few minutes" to baby sit you when you were 18 months old. He made me feel so big and important to get to do it. I have every card with the cute pictures that he made and sent at Christmas every year. You had such wonderful loving parents. Please let us know when you make the trip to Mississippi and we can met you. It is a quick trip for us. We love you so much and please know we are forever thinking of you and you are in our prayers daily.

My mother, Judy Luallin Ralls, often spoke of what a tremendous business teacher Mr. Tassis was. She often credidted him for her typing skills and jobs she earned due to those skills. I had Mr. Tassis for math at Frank Wright Junior High. He was one of the few great teachers there at that time. My sister and I later had Mrs. Tassis for Home Economics at Imperial High School, just as my mother had. Both of my parents were also teachers in the Imperial Unified School District. My father, Tom Ralls, taught for many years at Frank Wright alongside Mr. Tassis. He had a significant impact on my whole family. As a teacher now myself, I sometimes quote some of his infamous remarks. We will remember Mr. Tassis fondly and will mourn his loss. Lisa Ralls-Sotelo

Debbie- Both you parents had well deserved reputations of expecting much from their students and in turn sharing all the knowledge they had in their given fields. Education was training for the future and they took their tasks more seriously than any other teachers I can recall. On a personal note, they were very warm people who remained interested in their students long after high school days. Your Mom's gracious manner and your Dad's quirky sense of humor are traits I remember also.
Life without our parents is certainly different. Whether we see them on a daily basis or less often, we do not realize what a huge part of our lives they are until we no longer have them around. I hope your memories will give you comfort.

Debbie and Family,

Your Dad was a tremendous teacher. I loved each class I took with him as the teacher. He expected the best from each of his students. I learned so much from him and enjoyed being in all of his classes. He also had the best sence of humor. I have such fond memories of being in his classes. His teaching greatly influenced my life.

I pray that the wonderful memories you have of both your Mom and Dad will comfort you. God bless you and your family,

Patty (Robinson) Angulo

Deborah, as a member of the class of '68, I take great pride in having been a student in your dad's business courses. He was truly the best and most memorable teacher. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Your father was my teacher for a couple of years at Imperial High School and he was a tremendous influence on my life. I always smile when I think of him and I am sorry for your loss. Had I known he was still in El Centro, I would have come by to visit. He was a great teacher and a good person.

Debbie and Family, I am so sorry to hear of your parents passing. I know how much the loss of a spouse can leave a hole in your heart, but I also remember how very proud your parents were of you always. Take care and know we all have fond memories of those classes at IHS. Take care and always find the good memories. Susie Benson Yarnell
