DARRELL E. BYRD

Sept. 14, 1937 – Dec. 14, 2024

Darrell E. Byrd of El Centro, CA passed away after a brief illness following a series of health issues on December 14, 2024.

Darrell was born on September 14, 1937 in Upland, California and graduated from Chaffey Union High School in 1955.

In 1961, Darrell received his Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from California State Polytechnic College in Pomona, California. Darrell then joined the United States Navy in 1961, achieving the rank of Lt. Commander until his Honorable Discharge as a retired reserve in 1976. During his military service he was stationed in Oahu, Hawaii, Sasebo, Japan, San Diego, California and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Darrell moved his family to the Imperial Valley, settling in El Centro in 1970.

Darrell worked 35 years for the Imperial County Agricultural Commission from 1970 to 2005.

An avid horse enthusiast in his youth, Darrell competed in rodeo with distinction. He was also a gifted haiku poet, having had many of his poems published in journals.

Darrell was also a gifted musician, and he had a particular interest in bluegrass. He loved camping and hunting throughout western United States and even did a horse-riding expedition through Canada in his 60's.

Darrell was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, in 2008, and his son, Michael, in 2020.

He is survived by his daughter, Denise Byrd-Lizarraga; his granddaughter, Kendra Lizarraga; and his grandson, Jimmy Lizarraga.

My grandfather was a beacon of light and it will live on in our family legacy. My fondest memory of him is when he would brush my hair, feed me “hootie bread”, and walk me to school. I didn’t realize how truly amazing he was until I got a little older. It’s hard to come by solid people like him nowadays. I’m a very proud granddaughter to know that I was raised by a man with God in his heart. He was the most supportive person I’ve experienced in my life, and that deserves to be remembered for a lifetime. He was loved by many and I can definitely see why it’s hard for me to let go, but I find comfort and knowing that God is using him for more important things. You have done a great job grandfather and now, you have peace.
