GEORGE BLEK Obituary

DR. GEORGE L. BLEK

1938 2023

Last year, Dr. George Louis Blek passed away at the Adventist Health Hospital in Bakersfield, California. He was 85 years of age. George was born in Los Angeles, California. He was the middle child of Charles and Dorothy Blek.

George graduated from UCLA in 1959 with a Bachelor's degree in Speech and English. George later earned a Masters Degree from USC in 1963 and a PhD from Western Colorado University in 1975. George married Jane in 1960 in Inglewood, California and they were together for more than 62 years.

George began his career in education, teaching English for 6 years at Morningside High School in Inglewood. Then he transitioned into administration, serving as a vice-principal, principal, and finally as a superintendent. George's work as an administrator took him all over southern California, from Corona to Camarillo to El Centro to Bakersfield. While in the Imperial Valley, George was Principal at Wilson Junior High School and Superintendent at the McCabe School District.

George was a proud founding member of the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA). He also served on many accreditation committees throughout the state. After retiring, he continued to help school districts as an interim administrator.

Geoge was an avid reader and sports fan. George was also an accomplished golfer who played for UCLA and who carded two holes-in-one during his lifetime. George enjoyed being a referee for various sports, including high school football, basketball, and volleyball.

George is survived by his wife, Jane; three children, Craig, Scott, and Alicia; son-in-law, Chris; two daughters-in-law, Laurie and Alisa; three grandchildren; and his brother, Charlie. His sister Elizabeth preceded him in death.

A private memorial service for George was held last year with family members.

My deepest condolences for your loss. Dr Blek was my Principal at Wilson Jr High in El Centro. He was a joy to work for,and deeply cared about student academic success , always leading our faculty with respect and humor. I am so sorry for your loss. I had been gone from the Imperial Valley for many years, and often wondered where Dr Blek had gone. I wish I could have seen him before his passing,as I saw him as a friend , an exemplary educator and human being. May he rest in peace.

I will always remember with fondness, Wilson, Junior High school and Dr. Blek guiding students to or from classes with his bull horn. He always had time for a quick comment, observation or clever rejoinder to a student joke. The epitome of a man who enjoyed being in education. I recall my mom taking a speech class from Dr. Blek and thoroughly enjoyed it; made me wish I could have taken on of his courses. A great man, who influenced a lifetime of youth at a time when we needed a solid roll model.

I was lucky to know him as my friend“s dad when I was very young. Luckier still to have had him as our principal at Wilson. His love of family, sports, and his yellow Porsche were always evident. Mrs. Blek, Alicia, Scott, & Craig- I am sorry for your loss. Thank you for having shared him with several communities and those of us who were lucky to have been influenced by his leadership. Mr. Blek..."Thank you very much. Have a pleasant day. Get a hundred!"
