RICHARD CASEY Obituary

RICHARD E. CASEY

Apr. 22, 1938 - Apr. 19, 2013

Richard Casey, 74, was born in Brawley, growing up on the Casey family farm there.
He attended all Brawley schools from first grade through Brawley Union High, graduating in 1956.
"Dick" went on to attend the University of Southern California in Los Angeles earning a Doctorate in Marine Biology. He devoted his life to micro-biological research in the Pacific Ocean and to the health of the oceans of tomorrow. Through the Oceans Foundation and the University of San Diego, a catalyst evolved for bringing together organizations that would enhance such programs.
Dr. Casey was the first director of a new joint teaching and research program between the University and Sea World Research Institute. Dr. Casey had also worked and studied at Scripps Institution of Oceanography Cal State Northridge before being named head of the new USD program, "Casey's Kids," which focused on fostering, aiding and awarding scholarships for Foundation-student interests in oceanic issues. On more regional issues, Dr. Casey sought development of a Salton Sea laboratory to study the serious environmental problems facing that body of water.
Richard taught at San Francisco State College, held a professorship at Rice University, in Houston, Texas and finally at the University of San Diego until his retirement.
He is survived by his two daughters, Shannon Easton and Megan Casey-Jones. Granddaughters are: Serena Jones, Daphne Jones, Casey Easton and Avery Easton, all of San Diego. Additionally, he has two living brothers, George V. Casey of San Diego and Harry J. Casey of Brawley. His wife, Annette preceded him in death several years ago. He requested that his ashes be spread at the sea. Services are pending.

Richard Casey was the world's authority on radiolarian ecology and paleoecology during his lifetime. He had many publications. He was a conscientious teacher when he was my dissertation professor at Rice University. I visited him once in San Diego after he left Rice for the University of San Diego. I will remember him with great affection.
