James Porter Obituary

James E. Porter

James E. Porter, age 80 of Greenfield, died Friday, July 22, 2011 at Centennial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, July 24, 2011 at Bethel Baptist Church in Greenfield. Burial services to follow at Hornbeak Cemetery with Rev. Wayne Perkins and Rev. David Worley officiating.

Mr. Porter was a co-founder of Akin & Porter Produce. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955. He was a former Director and Chairman of the Board of First State Bank. He served on the Weakley County Commission in the 1970's. He was a long time member of Bethel Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was the adult mens Sunday School teacher for many years and served as Director of the Tennessee Baptist Foundation Board.

Mr. Porter was born August 22, 1930 in Greenfield to the late Rev. A.W. Porter and Helen Pope Porter.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley Stout Porter; son, Joe Porter of Greenfield; daughter, Jamie (Mark) Prince of Martin; grandchildren, Candice (Ty) Finney of Dresden, Brock (Lanae) Porter of Greenfield, Andrew (Candace) Porter of Greenfield, Kasey Prince of Nashville and Clay Prince of Naples, FL; six great grandchildren; one brother; long time business partner, Jack (Faye) Porter of Greenfield.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Chester Porter, Ray Porter, George Roy Porter and Gene Porter; sisters, Marie Porter Scholes and Helen Porter Bryan.

The family ask that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Baptist Childrens Home; Gideons International; or the American Cancer Society.
