Lillie Wood Obituary

Mrs. Lillie Belle Johnson Wood

Mrs. Lillie Belle Johnson Wood of Memphis, TN, died March 20, 2012, at the Cordova Estates Nursing Home.

The daughter of the late Harvey W. and Flora Johnson of the Huntersville Community, she was active in Jackson/Madison County through employment in the city, (Montgomery Ward) attendance at Union University and teacher at Pope School. Following her marriage to Rev. Fred Wood, she was helpful in working with youth and congregational groups in Kentucky and Tennessee. Prior to Dr. Wood's life time pastorate with Eudora Baptist Church in Memphis, they served the Dresden Baptist Church, Brazil and Salem Baptist Churches in Gibson County. She was beloved and respected wherever they lived.

Lillie was predeceased by brothers, Clifton, Leon, Frank and son, Mitchell. She is survived by, son, David and wife Jenny; sisters Christine Fairless and Sadie Lisenby; and, grandson Scott (Molly) Wood, grand daughters Kristen Wood, Diane (Tim) Tucker, great grandchildren, Will, Mathew and Jack Tucker plus nephews and nieces who have loving memories of Aunt Lillie who loved and cared for each of them as opportunities or needs arose.

Funeral services were Saturday, March 24 at Memorial Park Mausoleum Rotunda, Memphis.

It is comforting to know that because of Lillie's devout profession of Jesus as Lord, she has responded to the Heavenward (upward) call of Christ. Phil. 3:14.

Mrs. Wood was one of the sweetest people i've ever known. As neighbors and as members of Eudora Baptist Church where Dr. Wood baptized me at age ten, she was always a delightful person to be around. Her sons David and Mitchel were friends. i am sorry to learn that Mitch has passed away. My Mom and Dad, George and Velma Dunn are deceased, but on behalf of the Dunn Family--george jr, Carl, Jerry, and Barbara, we extend our deepest sympathy to the Wood family in the loss of such a wonderful lady.

My deeepest sympathies to Mrs. Wood's family. I was honored to serve as a bridesmaid in her wedding, Dec. 19, 1943 to Rev. Wood. She was a devout christian and a lovely lady.

Mrs. Wood was a remarkable lady, a bright and articulate, thoughtful, and strong person. She chose a life as a pastor's wife, and as such she skillfully steered clear of taking sides in local church politics, choosing wisely to deflect efforts to pull her from her chosen role as help meet for Dr. Wood. She loved him very much, loved their two sons dearly, and did all she could for others. She chose a place of leadership in the "Junior Department" in Sunday School, using her considerable talent to guide teachers and students. I will remember her grace and dignity, her natural Southern charm, and her true beauty as a Christian lady.
