Funeral services for Rev. Mel Williams 80 will be held Saturday November 27 2004 at 2:00 PM at West Jackson Baptist Church with Dr. Elzie Danley Evangelist Benny Jackson Dr. Jud Lambert and Dr. Maurice Hollingsworth officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens with Dr. Matt Tomlin and Dr. Jerry Tidwell officiating at the graveside. Rev. Williams died Wednesday afternoon at Jackson Madison County General Hospital. Rev. Williams was born in Hickman County Kentucky April 1 1924 the son of Walter and Radie Evans Williams. He was the Grandson of R. J. Williams a Baptist Minister who served all across West Tennessee for many years. Bro. Mel as he was known had served as a Baptist Pastor for over 55 years. He recently retired as Pastor of the Enville Baptist Church where he had served for over 11 years. He was past President of the Madison-Chester Association of Baptists. He was currently serving as the President of their Pastors Conference. He attended Union University Mississippi College and Memphis State University. He served in the Navy during World War II. He devoted his life to serving his Lord Jesus Christ through ministry in Baptist churches and loving his family. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Brenda Longmire Williams of Jackson TN three daughters Gayle Britt and husband Glenn of Cordova TN Dr. Lisa Rogers and husband Kenny of Jackson TN and Melise Lasley and husband Greg of Jackson TN. Eight Grandchildren David Britt Kristi Rogers Rebecca Rogers Austin Rogers Will Lasley Diannah Lasley Kathryn Lasley and Neal Lasley and three nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers Martin Williams and Moody Williams. The family will be receiving friends Friday November 26 2004 between the hours of 4:00PM and 7:00PM at the Funeral Home and from 1:00PM to 1:45PM Saturday at the church. All ordained Ministers are requested to sit as a group at the service.
