Lawrence Timmons Obituary

Lawrence (Larry) L. Timmons

Lawrence (Larry) L. Timmons was called home to his Lord on Saturday, May 3, at 8:30 am while a patient at IU Health University Hospital in Indianapolis after a 16 month battle with advanced liver disease and awaiting a liver transplant. He was born November 20, 1947, in Lafayette, Indiana to Floyd and Doris Timmons. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1965. He married Sharen Seley and had two sons, Robert and Monee. In June 1983, he married Sandra (Sandy) Shoemaker, and she survives.

Larry worked for Eli Lilly and Company - Tippecanoe Laboratories for 30 years retiring in 1998. At the time of his retirement, he worked in the maintenance department and was a welder and crane operator. After retirement, he started his own business, Timmons Home Repair, where his motto was "no job is too small."

Larry proudly served in the U.S. Army in the First Aviation Brigade - 13th Combat Aviation - 175th Assault Helicopter Company and served two tours in Vietnam. The first was from July 1966 - July 1967 in Vingh Long and the second in April 1968 for 90 days after the TET Offensive with the 25th Infantry Division at Chu Chi.

Larry was a member of the American Legion Post 11 and was a past member on the Executive Board. He also was co-chairman of the Post 11 Honor Guard and always felt it a great privilege to honor fallen veterans who proudly served our great country.

Larry enjoyed playing golf and played many years in the Eli Lilly and Company, Tippecanoe Labs Monday Evening Golf League. He also enjoyed taking cruises. Larry was a fun-loving person with a great sense of humor and was well liked by many people.

In addition to love of country, Larry deeply loved his family, and was particularly proud of his sons and grandchildren. Larry also loved his two dogs, Mindy and Max.

He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd Timmons, and mother, Doris Timmons. In addition to his wife, survivors include his son, Robert (wife Sarah); son, Monee (wife Linda); grandchildren Jackson and Jase Timmons; Bradley Foley and Heather Campbell (husband Jay); and great grandson Dylan Campbell. Also surviving are his sisters Sandy Sue Timmons (long-time partner Kris Wang) of Prescott, AZ; Ginger Maloney of Lafayette; and brothers Russell Timmons (wife Julie) of Lafayette, and David Timmons (wife Brooke) of Seminole FL; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 9, 2014, with a celebration of life service at 7 p.m. at Hippensteel Funeral Service, Celebrant Lavonne Summers officiating. Military honors will be held immediately following the service conducted by the American Legion Post 11 and the United States Army. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Lafayette Honor Flight (PO Box 275, Lafayette, IN 47902-0275) or the American Legion Post 11 (1801 South 9th Street, Lafayette, IN 47905).
