Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Salem Baptist Church, Sneads Ferry with the Revs. Russell Padgett and Dale Padgett officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Salem Cemetery Sneads Ferry.
Mr. Benefield was preceded in death by his parents, Alburn Faith Benefield and Ovelle Sloan Benefield; his first wife, Emma Kathryn Welchel Benefield; one daughter, Kathy Leilani Benefield; step-son, Brian Smith; and two brothers, Charles Ray Benefield and Dewey Benefield.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie Batton Benefield of the home; son, Douglas Lamar Benefield of Sneads Ferry; daughter, Karen Lynn Pearson of Chittenden, VT; stepson, Terry Lee Smith of Sneads Ferry; two sisters, Virginia Juanita Agan and Daphne Ledford, both of Cedartown, Ga.; brother, Thomas Wayne Benefield of Cedartown, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home, Holly Ridge Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Vietnam Veterans of American, 8719 Colesville Rd., Suite 100, Silver Spring, MD 20910 or to the American Cancer Society, 930 Wellness Dr. #B, Greenville, NC 27834.
