Donald Espy Obituary

Donald "Don" L. Espy, age 90, of Brookville, PA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at the Penn Highlands Jefferson Manor in Brookville, PA. Don was born in Brookville, PA, on July 26, 1934, to the late John Matson and Lulu (Varner) Espy.

Don graduated from Brookville High School in Brookville, PA, with the class of 1952. Following graduation, he attended the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland, on a full football scholarship. He then served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps before being honorably discharged as a result of an injury. He went on to attend Clarion University in Clarion, PA, for further college education.

Don married the love of his life, Joyce (Fricker) Espy on August 30, 1958, in Pittsburgh, PA; she survives. Their union of more than sixty-six years was a testament to the abiding love and devotion they shared with one another.

From 1958 to 1996, Don owned and operated the Brookville Flower Shop in Brookville, PA, retiring after thirty-eight years. He not only took pride in his flower shop but truly relished the friends he made during his time in business.

Don was a long-standing member of the Brookville Baptist Church and Brookville Presbyterian Church both located in Brookville, PA.

Throughout his lifetime, Don was a genuine sports enthusiast who was an avid golfer at the Pinecrest Country Club in Brookville, PA, playing well into his eighties. He had also participated in independent basketball and softball over the years. He enjoyed regular Bridge card games with his group. He also took on the major role of "Barn Manager," overseeing the care of his daughter's horses.

Don was a dedicated husband, father and cherished grandfather, always placing his family's well-being above all other considerations. He took immense pride in their achievements throughout their lives. Don was known for his sociable nature and sense of humor. He found joy in simple pleasures, often sharing stories and laughter with those around him. Don's loving family and friends will forever cherish his memory.

In addition to his wife Joyce, Don is survived by three children, Donald L. (Alicia) Espy Jr. of Summerville, PA, John P. (Seana) Espy of Delaware, Ohio, Cortland G. (Nick) Kalanavich of Indiana, PA; five grandchildren: Ryan Espy, Emily Espy, Adelyn Espy, Shakota Espy and Xzander Espy.

In addition to his parents, Don is preceded in death by one brother, Dr. John W. Espy. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

At the wishes of his family, all services will be held privately. Interment will also take place privately at the Richardsville Baptist Cemetery, Richardsville, Jefferson Co., PA. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Carrier Funeral Home, 2834 Maplevale, Rd., Brookville, PA 15825. When I read this today, my mind flashed back to our high school days & then later to the get togethers we had as young parents at various camps, such good times & Don & Joyce were always a part of it. The years passed, we moved away & yet the memories remained. Now there´s only a few of us left to be grateful for the wonderful times & life we´ve had. My thoughts are with you all & I wish Don well on his journey & the family fond memories of a life well lived. May those memories give you comfort.
Sincerely, Carole Shaffer Miller
