Thomas Schafer
May 19, 1952 - February 11, 2026
SHELBYVILLE - Thomas "Thom" Edward Schafer, 73, of Shelbyville, Illinois, passed away due to an unexpected medical issue on February 11, 2026, at home.
Thom was born on May 19, 1952, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Lowell and Mildred (Civve) Schafer. His journey began in Ohio, but his heart found its home when he married his soulmate, Elizabeth "Liz" Yantis, on October 9, 1976. Their life was one of true partnership and mutual respect, and together they navigated life's challenges and joys for 49 beautiful years. Thom's love for his family was evident in every aspect of his life, and he was a devoted father to his two sons, Bob (Rachel) Schafer of Neoga and Tim (Brandi) Schafer of Shelbyville. His three grandchildren, Samuel and Elena of Neoga, and Genevieve of Shelbyville, were the light of his life, and he cherished every moment he spent with them.
Thom is also survived by his siblings, Lana Jo (Larry) Thompson of Wolfe City, Texas, and Dale (Darlene) Schafer of Houston, Texas. His extended family includes several nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in his heart. Preceding Thom in death were his parents, his son Michael William, and his in-laws, all of whom he remembered with deep love and respect.
A proud veteran, Thom honorably served his country in the United States Air Force from 1971 to 1975. After his military service, he embarked on a career as a Journeyman Lineman and Field Engineer with Coles-Moultrie Electric Cooperative in Mattoon, where his work ethic and expertise were highly valued.
Thom's commitment to his community was unwavering. In Mattoon, he coached, refereed, and was a mentor. An active member of the American Legion Post 81 of Shelbyville and the Shelby County Honor Guard, he dedicated countless hours to honoring his fellow veterans. His service on the Shelbyville City Council reflected his desire to contribute positively to the town he called home.
Beyond his public service, Thom's interests were varied and rich. He and Liz shared a passion for revitalizing homes, tending to their yard, and enjoying the company of their beloved pets. Thom's love for music was a lifelong affair, and as a drummer, he found joy and expression in rhythm. An athlete in his youth, he was proud of his basketball scholarship at North Platte Community College in Nebraska.
Thom's wisdom, friendliness, and handiness were legendary. He found great satisfaction in teaching others as an instructor with the IBEW Local 702, where his knowledge and skills were greatly appreciated. Known for his sense of humor, Thom had a unique ability to connect with people, making lasting friendships wherever he went.
A memorial service to honor the remarkable life of Thomas Edward Schafer will be held on what would have been his 74th birthday, May 19, 2026. As a man who touched the lives of many, Thom's legacy of kindness, integrity, and loyalty will continue to inspire those who knew him. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the memories of his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of crossing paths with this extraordinary man. Memorials in Thom's honor may be made to the Shelby County Honor Guard or Saving Orphaned Animals and may be mailed to Lockart-Green Funeral Home, 302 W. Main St., Shelbyville, IL 62565.
