James Adkins Obituary
James "Jim" R. Adkins
January 5, 1956 – August 8, 2025
James "Jim" R. Adkins, 69, of Pocahontas, Arkansas, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 8th, in Pensacola, FL surrounded by the love of his family.
Born January 5th, 1956, in Muskegon, Michigan, at Hackley Hospital, Jim grew up with a deep sense of curiosity, a warm smile, and an unstoppable work ethic. By the age of 12, he was mowing lawns in his neighborhood, not just to earn money, but because he loved the feeling of working hard and lifting up his family. It was also during this time that he met Bill Rainwater, a local businessman and civic leader, who took Jim under his wing and mentored him.
That same drive would lead him into the world that became his lifelong passion, radio. At just 16 years old, a teacher at Walnut Ridge High School recommended him for a job at KRLW, the local radio station. The moment he stepped behind the microphone, Jim knew he had found his calling. His voice, his energy, and his genuine love for music made him a natural.
In 1989, Jim took a leap that changed his life forever. He purchased his first radio station with his partner and friend, Johnny Shields. Over the decades that followed, he owned and operated multiple stations, bringing music, community news, and connection to countless listeners. He finally retired in 2024, leaving behind not only a career but a legacy of dedication to the industry he loved.
Jim's passions were as colorful and lively as his personality. He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan (and wasn't shy about sharing his opinions when they weren't playing their best). He also enjoyed bowling. He loved sharp clothes, Polo cologne, a well-set holiday display, and the joy of handing out candy to neighborhood kids every Halloween. His home was always alive with music, from Kenny Loggins and Sting to the Beach Boys, James Taylor, and John Mayer. His singing was the constant soundtrack of family life.
He treasured his time with the love of his life, Kathie. Whether they were out enjoying a meal together or simply sitting side-by-side at home. His sons, Ben and Nick, and his grandson, Layne, were his pride and joy. Jim and Layne shared a special bond, often playing cards, watching TV together, and laughing through countless episodes of Two and a Half Men.
A devoted member of the Catholic Church, Jim also served his community as a longtime member of the Lions Club and as a city council member in Pocahontas. His commitment to service, his generosity, and his ever-present smile made him a friend to all who knew him. No one was a stranger when Jim was in the room.
Jim is survived by his wife, Kathie Adkins; his sons, Nick Adkins (Paloma) and Ben Adkins (Kelli); his grandson, Layne Adkins; and his siblings, Rhynea DeBow, Art Adkins (Eileen), Carla Crowell (Jim), and multiple nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Grace Lavern Williams, and his brother, Jess Adkins.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 16th, from 8:30–10:00 a.m., followed by a funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Pocahontas, Arkansas. Burial will follow.
Jim lived his life with music in his heart, love in his home, and a deep belief in the value of hard work. His voice, both over the airwaves and in the lives of those he loved, will be dearly missed, but his song will never fade.
