Shirley Mitchell Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and an abundance of love that we announce the passing of Shirley Ann Mitchell, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, educator, and friend. Shirley was born on August 7, 1947, in Paragould, Arkansas, and left this world and received her heavenly wings on July 25, 2025, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, after a valiant battle with dementia. Shirley's life was a testament to her unwavering commitment to her family and her passion for education. She was the cherished wife of Steve Mitchell, with whom she shared 61 years of marriage after they wed on May 21, 1964. Together, they raised a family that includes their sons, Stevie Mitchell, Jr. and his wife Tiffany, and Stan Mitchell, as well as their daughter, Sherlyn Bates, and her husband Harry. Each of her children was a source of immense pride and joy to Shirley. Her grandchildren, Katelyn Allen and her husband Drew, Stan Mitchell, Jr., Justin Bates and his wife Kennedy, and Nina Kay Mitchell were the lights of her life. Shirley also leaves behind her loving sister, Wanda Sue George. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Lavelle and Dorothy George; grandparents, Herman and Laura Edgar; and sister, Janice McLain. After her children graduated from high school, Shirley embarked on a journey of personal growth that saw her obtaining her GED. Her thirst for knowledge led her to Arkansas State University, where she earned her Bachelor's degree in early childhood education. Shirley was a beacon of light in the field of education, touching the lives of countless children throughout her career. She taught at Westside School and then at Valley View School until her retirement, leaving a legacy of love and learning. Shirley was a true pioneer in early childhood education, known for her innovative spirit and dedication. In the 1990s, she founded the pre-K program at Kid's Kingdom Childcare, where she also served as the director. Her work was not just a job; it was a calling that she embraced with her entire being. Beyond her professional achievements, Shirley was a woman of many talents and interests. From the tender age of 14, she graced the church with her musical gift as a talented organist and singer, a service she joyfully provided for over 35 years. Her love for music was only matched by her love for travel, spending time with family, and creating memories that she cherished throughout her life. When Shirley was diagnosed with dementia, she found solace and companionship in her loving dog, Bella, an 8-pound Yorkie. Bella was not just a pet but a faithful companion who fought the journey of dementia alongside Shirley for 12 years. Shirley's nurturing spirit found fulfillment in caring for Bella, who remained a constant source of comfort and companionship. The family will receive friends Monday, July 28, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Tuesday, July 29 at 1:00 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home with Stan Mitchell and Harry Bates officiating. Burial will follow at Linwood Cemetery. Merle Mitchell, Bill Mitchell, Jr., Rondal Jack Mitchell, Mike Craft, David Scales, and Kameron Newberry will serve as pallbearers. Shirley's brothers and sisters-in-love, nieces, nephews, PACE Program caregivers, and personal caretaker Mallory Willard will serve as honorary pallbearers.
