Alan Wood Obituary

SAN ANGELO, Texas - Alan Aubrey Wood, 71, passed away April 3, 2024, at his home in San Angelo, Texas. He was born Nov. 1, 1952, to Aubrey Wood and Louise Dowless Wood and grew up in Caraway with his beloved sister Janis Louise Wood Lairson (1946-2021).

Alongside working on the family farm in his youth, Alan dedicated himself to his community by earning the Order of the Arrow in the Boy Scouts of America and joining the Aaronic priesthood as a deacon and then priest of The Community of Christ (formerly the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints).

During his time at Caraway High School, Alan was a center for the basketball team and was voted prom king when he graduated in 1970. He is survived by his daughter, Sarah Wood Meredith from his high school sweetheart, Melissa Brickell, and two grandsons, Max and Dylan.

Alan went on to graduate from Arkansas State University with a Bachelor of Science in psychology in 1988 and had a long career as a social servant in behavioral hospitals which culminated with a 15-year service pin for his work with inmates at the Florida Department of Corrections.

Alan married his lifelong love, Lisbeth Mari Northup, in 1985 and is survived by Lizzie and their two children, Drs. Kelli and Michael Wood, as well as his granddaughter, Ellie Wood.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. May 11, at the Caraway Community of Christ, 201 N. San Francisco Ave., in Caraway, followed by an interment of his ashes in the Caraway Cemetery.

Alan and I 1st met on graveyard shift working in an emergency mental health unit. The stress it contained was strong at times, but Alan always showed up with a smile and his McDonald's breakfast to share. We would go over the notes and hi-points of the shift, keeping each other prepared so as to be out of harm's way. Unknown to me, he was preparing me to move on to my next role as a Tier 3 Tx HSC 3 counselor w/FL Department Of Corrections. We served together there with a special team, and changed the lives of many.

Alan was a wonderful soul and had a way of making everyone feel important.
I was blessed to work with him at 2 different venues. His catchy sense of humor and humble personal sharing were keys in de-escalating stressful situations at crucial times. He was an icon as both co-worker and friend to me.

Alan was a true inspiration to all of us working at Martin Unit Treatment Center
at Martin Correctional Institute. He was a confidante and friend, someone I have followed through the years as much as possible, and I will miss him. He will probably be at the gate greeting new souls in heaven with that smile!

I have many happy childhood and young adult memories of trips from Michigan to Arkansas to spend time with Alan, my other cousins, aunts, uncles, and Grandma Dowless. Alan was a special person who was proud of all of his children.
