LITTLE ROCK - The honorable David Nichols Laser died this day, June 9, 2024, comfortable and cared for at Arkansas Hospice in Little Rock.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Fletcher Laser, son, David Nichols Laser Jr., daughters, Laura Laser and Amy Laser, grandchildren, Camille Boswell, Jakob Mueller and Marley Boswell, sister, Esther Paul, brother-in-law, Thomas Paul, and his beloved cat, Happy.
Judge Laser was born Feb. 17, 1941, in Forrest City. He earned his Juris Doctorate in 1965 from the University of Arkansas. He practiced law and raised his family in Jonesboro. In 1999, he assumed the Division 9 judgeship of the Second Circuit of Arkansas until retirement in 2014. Of particular note, he established the first drug court in his circuit.
Judge Laser was active in the recovery community and a founding committee member of the Arkansas Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program, an office of the Supreme Court of Arkansas that provides behavioral health care services to the legal community. Judge Laser imparted unassuming wisdom and guidance to many, both in court and in his personal life.
Judge Laser's intense love of his family, friends, community and colleagues was felt deeply by all who experienced him. His humor, often a "wild card," will be remembered by many for years to come. He held deep empathy and respect for those who crossed his path and he lived by his commitment to service. He will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Arkansas JLAP or Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis.
A celebration of Judge Laser's life will be held in Jonesboro from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 29 at the Craighead County Courthouse, 511 S. Main St.

David played a very significant role in my early recovery. A seemingly inconsequential conversation we had one evening in the spring of 1990 became one of those turning point moments in my recovery. While I was struggling with that gnawing "restless, irritable, discontent" feeling and felt on the verge of relapse, David very simply told me to begin writing my fourth step. It was like he had revealed the answer, I went home that night and began writing and the miracle of recovery began to take place in my life. My late father Tom, who also knew David, told me about David, "many are called, few are chosen" and I believe that was true, David touched so many lives in recovery.

At the law office, we had a man who would come in about once a month selling these one of a kind large penciled drawings For one of my birthdays, David bought one of the drawings of a beautiful angel and gave it to me, just because I had commented that I loved it. That was just David Laser.
ANN AND FAMILY, MY HEART IS BREAKING FOR YOU. I will be praying for comfort from God.

I loved David's mind. His mind was not cluttered with unnecessary "stuff", but was, pun intended, laser focused and he could articulate that laser focused thought as well. I helped David deal with removing some of his folks belongings out of their house after his mother passed away. He helped me in a multitude of ways, and I shall miss him.
