POCAHONTAS – Dr. Joe Keith Jones, 79, of Pocahontas passed away Monday, April 26, 2021.
Dr. Jones was born Nov. 29, 1941, to the late Keith and Pearl Spencer Jones of Maynard.
He graduated from Maynard High School in 1959. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Harding University.
Upon graduation, he was accepted to dental school at the University of Tennessee where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1966.
Joe had a long dental career that began when he joined the U.S. Army as a captain and served in Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for rebuilding the facilities of Engineer Hill Dental Clinic by planning and guiding the project.
While in Vietnam, he frequently visited several distant and remote villages to give dental treatment to the Vietnamese people who had never had dental care.
After his tour in Vietnam, he moved to Pocahontas to open his private dental practice. He enjoyed 43 years of dentistry before retiring in 2011 to spend time with family and enjoy life.
He supported many charities and volunteered his time to support Arkansas Mission of Mercy by providing free dental services to Arkansans.
He was a longtime member of the Rotary Club. He served as president of the Northeast Arkansas District Dental Society, president of Rolling Hills Country Club and board member of Pocahontas Schools.
He had many interests and hobbies. He was an avid golfer, Razorback fan and fisherman. He also enjoyed playing pool, hunting, boating, water skiing and watching sports of any kind.
The family would like to thank all his friends, especially John Johnson, Jerry and Peggy Williams, Mary Watson, Reva Halsey, Wanda Thielemier, Debbie Humes and Angie Moore, for all their help and concern during this difficult time.
Joe is survived by his children, Mark (Karen) Jones and Kelly (Ron) South, all of Jonesboro, and Chris (Marti) Jones of Conway; grandchildren, who affectionately called him Papa Joe, Trent Jones, Matthew (Morgan) Jones, Spencer Jones, Peyton South, Alexandra South and Olivia South, all of Jonesboro, and Tate Jones and Wren Jones of Conway.
Visitation will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Friday with funeral service following at 1 p.m. in McNabb Funeral Home Chapel with Nelson Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Maynard Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Trent Jones, Matthew Jones, Spencer Jones, Peyton South, Jeff Spencer and John Johnson.
Honorary pallbearers will be his granddaughters, Alexandra South, Olivia South, Tate Jones and Wren Jones, along with his lifelong golfing and fishing buddies.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Haven House in Conway, Arkansas Children's Hospital or a charity of your choice.
