Peggy Houston Obituary

JONESBORO - Peggy Ruth Zachry Houston, 90, of Jonesboro, passed away on Aug. 3, 2025. She was born on Nov. 24, 1934, in Blytheville, to the late Raymond and Helen Hardin Zachry. Peggy married the love of her life, whom she met on a blind date, Bill Houston, and they shared many wonderful years together until his passing in July 2022.

A lifelong learner, Peggy attended Arkansas State University where she earned a Bachelors, Master, Specialist and Counseling Degrees. A dedicated educator and mentor at Trumann Elementary, Peggy devoted her career to inspiring students and guiding fellow teachers. Known for her quick wit and take-charge spirit, she was a natural leader who poured herself into her school, community, and church. She was an active member and Deacon of First Presbyterian Church in Jonesboro, where her faith and service touched many lives.

Peggy is survived by her daughter, Carla Houston of Jonesboro; her sons, Billy (Bubba) G. Houston, Jr. (Pam) of Jonesboro and John David Houston (Karla) of Baton Rouge, La.; and many beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who brought her great joy. She was preceded in death by her parents Raymond and Helen Zachry, husband Bill Houston and brother Raymond (Buddy) Edward Zachry.

The family would like to thank some special people who helped with Peggy's care. Patricia Kirkpatrick for all the love and care she provided our Mother and to Dr. Lee Cranfill for his continued care and support for our family.

A memorial service celebrating Peggy's life will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Jonesboro on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2025, at 4 p.m. Visitation will be prior to the service at 3 p.m. Friends, family, and former students are invited to join in honoring her remarkable life and legacy.

Peggy will be remembered for her leadership, compassion, and unwavering love for her family, students, and community. She served many leadership roles in the Alpha Delta Kappa teacher sorority and Phi Mu Fraternity at Arkansas State University.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorials to be made to Peggy Houston Memorial Fund, Arkansas Community Foundation, 5 Allied Drive, Suite 51110, Little Rock, Ark., 72202. www.arcf.org/peggy
