Alexander Girelli Obituary

Alexander Girelli, age 84, of Manchester, died Thursday, April 14, 2011, surrounded by his family.

Alex was born May 20, 1926, in Providence, R.I., son of Pauline and Egidio Girelli, loving husband of 62 years of Marie (DiMeglio) Girelli. He graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in Providence in 1944, and served in the 5th Cavalry in the Philippines and Japan during World War II. He completed his Bachelor of Arts and pursued graduate studies in English literature and French at Boston University. He dedicated his career to the Manchester Evening Herald, serving as reporter, then city editor until his retirement. He served as the president of the Connecticut Chapter of Sigma Delta Chi and was a charter member of the Manchester Jaycees. He had a passion for carpentry and built scenery for the Little Theatre of Manchester after retirement.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by Steven Girelli and Gwen Kesten of Glastonbury, and their children, Ariel, Mikayla, and Austin; Alan Girelli and Cheryl Aglio-Girelli of Needham, Mass., and their children, Aaron and Ian; and Carl and Anita Girelli of Salisbury, N.C., and their children, Anthony and Amanda. He was predeceased by his siblings, Paul Girelli, Emilio Girelli, Ines Marino, and Corinne Giocondo.

In celebration of his life the Girelli family invites family and friends to a memorial Mass at St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church, 736 Middle Turnpike, Manchester, on Saturday, April 30, at 11:30 a.m. A gathering will follow the service at 1 p.m. at Georgina's, 275 Boston Turnpike, Bolton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to North Central Hospice and Palliative Care, Visiting Nurse & Health Services of Connecticut, 8 Keynote Drive, Vernon, CT 06066.
