Barry Loucks Obituary

Barry R. Loucks, 65, of Windsor, husband of Patricia (Young) Loucks, retired President and CEO of the Simsbury Bank & Trust Company, died Monday, May 12, 2008 at Hartford Hospital.

Born in Cooperstown, N.Y., son of Margaret (Roberts) Loucks of Windsor and the late Stanley B. Loucks, Barry was a life long Windsor resident. He graduated from the Loomis Chaffee School in 1961, received his BA in Political Science from Syracuse University in 1965, and graduated from the Williams School of Banking in 1975. Barry's professional career in banking spanned over 43 years along with an equal time spent in community, political, and association involvement. Professionally, he started his career with the former Connecticut Bank & Trust Company in 1965; served as President and CEO of both the former Windsor Bank & Trust Company, which became the New England Bank & Trust Company, and President and CEO of the Simsbury Bank & Trust Company, retiring in 2004 and continuing as a Director until his death. He served as Chairman, President, and Director of the Connecticut Bankers Association, Connecticut Community Bankers Association, Bankers Bank Northeast, and Commercial Loan Partners. His leadership roles extended to the Windsor community where he was elected Selectman in 1971, served on the Zoning Board of Appeals, and elected to the Windsor Town Council from 1972-1981 serving as Deputy Mayor from 1977-1979. Barry always wanted to give back to the communities where he lived and worked and served in leadership roles in his church, Grace Episcopal as Senior Warden, Vestry member, and on the Finance Committee; also the Windsor Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Historical Society, Nutmeg Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Windsor Club, McLean Foundation, and the Metropolitan YMCA. His dedication and commitment earned him recognition as Windsor Republican of the Year, the YMCA's Distinguished Service Award, the Windsor Chamber's Jerry Hallas Award, which he shared with his father, the Paul Harris Award from the Windsor Rotary, and Simsbury's Businessman of the Year Award in 2005. Barry was an avid golfer and enjoyed participating in benefit tournaments.

Besides his wife, Pat, and mother Margaret, he leaves his three daughters and their husbands, Wendy L. Torres and Frank of Windsor, Karen L. Whitehouse and Tom of East Granby, and Kristin E. Pabich and Peter of West Simsbury; his brother, Richard A. Loucks, and his wife, Sharon, of Windsor; a mother-in-law, Lucille Young; a brother-in-law, Larry Young, and his wife, Sandy; five grandchildren, Jonathan, Christopher, and Michael Torres and Amanda and Taylor Whitehouse; several nieces and nephews, and a cousin, Carol Crounse, and her husband, Tom. Besides his father, Stanley, he was predeceased by his sister, Marilyn Barhydt Loucks.

Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Service Thursday, May 15, 11 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 311 Broad Street, Windsor. Private Burial will be in Palisado Cemetery, Windsor.

His family will receive friends Wednesday, May 14, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Avenue, Windsor.

I first met Barry Loucks after I was hired for my first 'real' job as a teller at Windsor Bank. He was a genuine and kind man and made everyone feel comfortable around him. He was loved by employees and customers alike. He will be missed. My heart goes out to his family and friends at this time and in the days ahead.

A generous, humble, honest man with a big smile and a contagious laugh. An experienced community banker with great technical expertise yet imminently approachable and possessing of the "common touch" found only in uncommon people. Barry had all the qualities of a successful leader. Everyone who met Barry was better for the experience. As long as we keep his memory alive he will remain with us. Rest in Peace.

As an employee of The Simsbury Bank, I never had the pleasure of working with Barry, but as a long time customer of the bank, I found him to be one of the most genuine and kind men I have ever met. I never saw him without a big smile on his face. That smile will truly be missed around our office here in Simsbury and undoubtedly anywhere else that Barry may have visited. My deepest sympathy to Barry's entire extended family.
