Janina was born on February 6, 1933, in Jablonna, Poland, the daughter of the late Michal Sobczak and Helena (Jajak) Sobczak. Janina was the first person in her family to come to this country in 1955, immigrating here from Germany to be later joined by her parents and four siblings. She met Jan in Holyoke and Jan and Janina married in 1958. Janina and Jan started a family soon after in Windsor, eventually settling in Enfield in 1964, where they raised their five sons. She loved to visit Elizabeth Park, in Hartford, to view the roses and, when younger, her sons would end each visit by feeding the ducks and goldfish. She was a wonderful cook, specializing in Polish food, and worked as a chef at the Felician Sisters in Enfield part-time. She became a citizen in 2006 and traveled back to her childhood home in Poland, where was greeted by her childhood best friend that she last saw at the start of World War II, at the age of 6.
