Joan Powers Obituary

Joan M. Powers
JOAN M. POWERS, age 89, passed away on February 16, 2024, in Tolland, CT with her family at her side. Joan was born in Winsted, CT the daughter of Robert and Anna (O'Heron) Carter. She was the eldest of eight siblings.
Joan was a loving mother to her six children. She is survived by Kathleen Mesco of Tolland, Joseph B. Powers (Sally) of Vernon, Martin Powers (Mary) of Tolland, and Linda Baxer (Michael) of West Hartford, CT. She was preceded in death by her beloved sons Peter M. Powers and Brian T. Powers, her son-in-law, James Mesco and her former husband, Joseph B. Powers.
Joan is also survived by her sisters, Suzanne Davidson, Christine Dupont (Julian) and Catherine C. Adams. She was predeceased by her siblings, William Carter, DDS, Robert Carter, Linda L. Bean and Elizabeth Carter.
Joan will be remembered for her love of travel and running. Often at the same time! Joan ran all over the world and it gave her great joy. Joan was an early disciple of Jim Fixx and the Complete Book of Running. She was a fixture at the Manchester Road Race and often finished in the top of her age group. Ever active, she summited Mt. Washington at the age of 75.
In addition, Joan loved her time on Cape Cod hanging on the beach, wandering P-Town, hitting the flea market and drive-in movies with her family. She loved a good drag show and collecting tattoos. She was, literally, a work of art.
Joan made the best waffles and her cole slaw was second to none. She knit beautiful head bands and was generous when handing them out.
Joan's greatest joy was her 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She leaves to mourn her passing: James Mesco Jr., Joseph Powers Jr. (Salima), Ann Powers, Thomas Powers (Betty), Kathleen Powers (Tomas), Matt Powers (Tara), Megan Powers, Marisa Coulter (Sean), Julia Powers, Emily Baxer, Timothy Baxer, and Hannah Baxer. Great-grandchildren: Chance Powers, Riley, Declan and Marshall Coulter and Lincoln Powers.
A memorial service will be held on March 21, 2024, at 11 a.m. at ST. MATTHEW CHURCH, 111 Tolland Green, Tolland, CT 06084.
The family wishes to thank Carol and Nancy of the VNA for their compassionate care and support. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the CORNERSTONE FOUNDATION, INC., 15 Prospect Street, Rockville, CT 06066.

Marty, Joe, Linda, and Kathy,
So sorry to here of Joan's passing. She was something special to me growing up and hanging at 65 Thrall Rd. She always treated me as her own as me and Marty were inseparable. Those days were the best days of my childhood. I'll never gorget them. Oh yeah, and I'll never forget Joans famous pancakes with Karo corn syrup.
