Martin C. Evensen
Martin C. Evensen, 90, of Vernon, husband of 70 years of the late Barbara C. (Minnock) Evensen, passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, in Manchester.
Martin was born on October 15, 1934 to Margaret (Pedersen) and Christian Evensen of Cromwell, CT, and was raised in Cromwell, along with his siblings Nedda (Evensen) Webber and David Evensen. Martin and his wife, Barbara, raised two sons in Vernon, CT, where the couple lived for over 60 years.
Martin honorably and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1957 to 1959 on active duty with the 2nd Landing Support Company, 2nd Service Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, attaining the rank of Corporal. He continued his service in the Marine Corps Reserve until 1963. During his time in the Marine Corps, he completed specialized training as an Engineer Equipment Mechanic, in Mine Warfare, and in diesel crawler and tractor repair and maintenance.
He found a new home for these skills when he began his civilian career as a line worker for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft where he was known for mechanical aptitude, his strong work ethic, and his reliability. Martin later built a long and dedicated 25-year career as a Corrections Officer at the Connecticut Correctional Institution in Somers, CT. During his time as a CO, Martin served on the Executive Board of Council 16, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO, and was president of Local 391 at the prison.
During his spare time, Martin loved to tinker with bicycles, lawnmowers, tractors, and motorcycles, and was an expert at repairing these machines, a task he would often perform for neighbors and friends. For many years, opening day of fishing season meant a pancake breakfast at the church for Martin and his sons, following by early morning fishing with the boys and fellow COs at Crescent Lake in Somers. Martin also devoted his time as a dedicated member of several voluntary organizations, including the VFW Post 2046, American Legion Post #14, the Brotherly Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 1893, the Loyal Orange Lodge No. 117 in Manchester, and was a proud member of the Masons, Friendship Lodge No. 145, A.F. and A.M. in Manchester, and the Sphinx
Shriners Hospital Center in Newington.
Martin is survived by his two sons, Christian (Jennifer) Evensen of Canandaigua, NY and Erik Evensen of Tolland; and his five cherished grandchildren, Rachel, Cailin, Elijah, Zachary and Spencer.
