Richard Scheller Obituary

Richard "Dick" Max Scheller Sr., 84, of South Windsor, beloved husband of Virginia "Ginny" Wagner Scheller, passed away peacefully Aug. 5, 2019.

He was born in Hartford, July 18, 1935, son of the late Max O.P. and Martha (Krause) Scheller. Max grew up in Wethersfield, raised his boys in Hartford, and later moved to South Windsor with his wife in 1994. He was employed as a linesman and residential installer for the Southern New England Telephone Co. until his retirement. He proudly served in the CT Army National Guard and retired honorably as a SFC. Among his many accolades, Max was a distinguished marksman and won the prestigious President's 100 National Rifle match. As a historian of both 19th and 20th century antiquities, Max aided others in researching regimental steins and military collections. He belonged to, and supported, both the Hartford Saengerbund and Hartford Liederkranz. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.

In addition to his loving wife Ginny, he is survived by two sons, Richard Max Scheller Jr. and his wife, Lynda, and James Henry Scheller and his wife, Mary Ann; two grandchildren, Brandon and Blaire Scheller; and his sister and brother-in-law, Janet Scheller Ford and her husband, Allen.

Relatives and friends may join the family for calling hours Wednesday, Aug. 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Samsel and Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, Aug. 15, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Rocky Hill.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Max's memory may be made to the Hartford Saengerbund, 719 North Mountain Road, P.O. Box 310435, Newington, CT 06131-0435, Veteran Relief Fund, P.O. Pop...It never gets easier. Life without you has been tough to say the least but the love you gave me, the lessons you taught me and the strength you showed me...help me move on a bit more every day. I miss ya but I carry you in my heart always so a part of you lives on in me. Rock the heavens, Pop. I'll handle things down here. Till we meet again...love and miss you more than words can say. Always in my heart. Forever....Ricky

I met Max when I joined the EWSC in 1999. Right away, he called me friend. He was a gentle man to talk to, and he will always be a part of my life. Rest in Peace.

Max was a friend and mentor to many in the shooting sports. Over the years Max and Ginney were gracious hosts for the many memorable Hartford Rifle Club celebrations. Besides being the club grill master, Max was a humorous storyteller and brought good cheer wherever he would go. In addition, he was the defacto club historian for the Hartford Schutzen Verein established in 1864. He will be sorely missed by all.

Max was a kind a gentle man with a huge heart. He and my husband, Pat, were friends when they were in their early twenties and then as time passed they did not see too much of each. They rekindled their friendship several years and we have found Max to be a caring and faithful friend these past few years. He will be missed but not forgotten. My prayers are with you, Ginny, and with Max' sons.

Max was a friend, comrade, Santa Claus and one heck of a great man. He was a vast wealth of knowledge and had an endless vat of humor always willing to share. He will be surely missed at the East Windsor Sportsman's Club. Always the "talk of the town here," we don't know how to act, think, and just be ourselves without Max. He'll be a tough one to replace. We all love " Ginney," and are here for her , always.
