Thomas Danahy Obituary

Thomas M. Danahy, 50, of Manchester, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at Manchester Memorial Hospital after a year and a half battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family and longtime partner, Valerie Gudeahn.

Tom was born Nov. 14, 1959, in Hartford, son of Martin T. Danahy and Mary Lou Morrison-Danahy of Manchester. Tom lived in Manchester for the past 45 years. He graduated with high honors from Manchester High School and attended the University of Connecticut and the University of Hartford. He was a valued employee of AT&T for the last 20 years. Tom was gifted intellectually, artistically, and musically. He began the study of violin at the age of 7 but later developed a passion for jazz piano. He spent many hours jamming with fellow musicians and countless hours entertaining friends and family with his improvisations and Joplin rags. Tom was a very quiet person, but once you got to know him he had a wonderful dry wit. He also greatly enjoyed walking his Siberian Husky, "Sapphire," especially going to the South Windsor dog park.

In addition to his parents and partner, Valerie, Tom is survived by his sister, Kim Gudeahn of Manchester; two brothers, Andrew Danahy also of Manchester, Matthew Danahy of New York City; two aunts, Dorothy Sanders of Glastonbury, Betty Wilson of Manchester; three uncles, Neil Danahy and Kenneth Wilson, both of Manchester, Charles Morrison of Glastonbury; many cousins; and a special friend of Tom and his family, Barbara Washburn of Manchester. Tom had a very special and loving relationship with Valerie's two children, Taylor and Noressa Gudeahn-Alleno of Poland, Maine. Tom will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Calling hours will be Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester.

Funeral services will be held Monday Jan. 25, 2010, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Episcopal Church, 41 Park St., Manchester.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Artists Collective Inc., 1200 Albany Ave., Hartford, CT 06112, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Although I am not biologically his, He very well was the father I never had due to my actual father passing away at a young age. Him and my mother Valerie were close and I spent many years with Tom. I just wanted to write to you dad, and tell you how much I miss and love you! Mary Lou and I write every now and then. She's got cancer as well. I feel for her. Tommy, I miss your hugs. Your knowledge. It's almost been 10 years and feels like yesterday. We all miss you dearly and I hope that you're feeling better up there!

An Irish Prayer

May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. May the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, May the Lord hold you in the palm of His hand.

Our deepest condolences. Your family is in our prayers.

Mrs. Danahy - My brother Timothy called me this morning with this sad news. I remember Tommy as we were kids running around your house - the Danahys around the corner. I remember when he broke his arm - crossing the street to St. James (or something like that - a car hit him??).

I have fond memories.

I met Tom through his cousin Michael back in Junior High School. Tom was a gentle and giving soul. I enjoyed Tom's company at Manchester High where we would spend free periods hanging out in the piano practice rooms. I would sit and watch with amazement while Tom played rags and jammed on the piano. He also taught me some cool bossa nova progressions on the guitar that I still play today as warm up exercises.

Time and distance separated us many years ago, but I'm sad to learn of his passing so young. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

Tom, your passing was very sudden and shocking to me personally. Years growing up with you and Andy as our first cousins, seeing Aunt Mary Lou and Uncle Marty so proud of your musical talents, those days up in the attic as you played drums or guitar and wrapped in the snaps of genius was a humor and wit as you shined above us all. I always admired how you made anything complicated seemingly simple, and done so eloquently.

You’ll be missed cousin.

Please accept my heartfelt sympathy.....I worked with Tom at the Phone Company in "the good old days" and spent many long hours with him while cutting over customer's new phone systems.....Tom was an excellent Tech, but the thing I enjoyed most, was talking to Tom about everything under the sun...he had a thirst for knowledge and we got to share thoughts about music, art, books......and as I got to know him better, his sense of humor was next to none...how he could get me laughing!!
Remember the good times....he is at peace now, no more suffering.
