Thomas C. Tucker, 62, the husband of Maureen Gorman, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017. He succumbed to Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), a rare neurological disease which he battled with great dignity over the last five years.

Born in Grosse Pointe, Michigan on May 22, 1955, he was the son of Floyd J. and Geraldine (Bailey) Tucker of Rocky Hill, formerly of Adrian, Michigan. A 1973 graduate of Manchester High School, he studied for two years at Manchester Community College, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wesleyan University in 1977 and later earned MS and MBA degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. During a career spanning almost 40 years in the insurance industry Tom held positions as the Chief Underwriting Officer for The Hartford Insurance Company's Commercial Markets Division and Senior Vice President of the Specialty Commercial segment. Prior to joining The Hartford, Tom worked at AIG where he served as Chief Underwriting Officer and Chief Risk Officer for its U.S. operations. He spent the first 20 years of his career at The Travelers Insurance Company. A survivor of the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York City, Tom helped a number of strangers to safety.

In addition to his loving wife and parents, Tom is survived by his sisters, Cynthia Tucker Higgins of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida and Newport Beach, California, Jeraldine "Jerry" Tucker of Cromwell, and Jacqueline "Jackie" DiMatteo of Rocky Hill; and niece and nephews, Heather Higgins van Scoyk, Tucker Higgins, Tommy DiMatteo, and Maxx DiMatteo.

To The Tucker Family: I am so sorry to learn of your loss and pray that Tommy is at peace. I met Tommy at Wesleyan and have many fond and warm memories of the times we spent together at there and the years afterwards. He was extremely kind, smart, gracious, witty, generous, and caring. Any time he spoke of his family, he immediately would have a huge smile.

I immensely enjoyed meeting all of you over the years. Your house was always full of fun, deep caring, warm and touching stories. You welcomed me with open arms and I have been very grateful for your kindness and acceptance.

Tommy and I reconnected when he was still at AIG for lunch in NYC. I teared up as he took my heavy briefcase and insisted on carrying it for me. It was a small gesture but spoke volumes about Tommy's kindness which was an innate part of him. He was an exemplary gentleman. I was blessed to have known him.

Many you find comfort to know that though Tommy's life was short, he lived his life large and impacted as many people as ten ordinary people would. Tom was not ordinary in any way; he was extraordinary is all ways.

May his unwavering love for all of you and great memories carry you through these difficult days.

With heartfelt sympathy,

Lynn M. Thomas

Tom Tucker helped me start my career at AIG in 2009. He was such a great mentor to me. He always went above and beyond to help me in anyway he could. He involved me in special projects and spent extra time to explain things to me. He was extremely bright and I know anyone that has worked with Tom will agree. It was very special for me to receive this kind of attention from somebody with that high level of job. I've always appreciated Tom's advice and will forever cherish the time I was able to spend with Tom.

One quick story...

As a recent college graduate entering the corporate world, I did not have much of a wardrobe. Tom, being the kind person that he is, gave me some old suits of his that he didn't wear anymore. Luckily I am a tall guy like Tom so they fit with little tailoring. I now had a great (very) expensive corporate wardrobe working for a company that, unbeknownst to us, would ultimately move to a business casual environment. Didn't matter, I loved to wear Tom's suits and frankly still do.

I remember one rainy day we took the elevator up to our floor together and I complimented him on his raincoat saying that I needed to get one. I was not hinting toward the notion of him giving me a raincoat, but at that moment the man literally gave me the coat off of his back and said, "take it, John I've got three more of these". Of course I refused but when Tom says "please take the coat, John" I had to take it. That is just the kind of man he was. He was a kind, generous and hard-working man. I can only hope to be half the man that he was.

My condolences go out to the family and friends of Tom. May he rest in peace.

To the Tucker family: I'm so sorry to hear of your loss and hope that Tommy is in a better place now. He was my best friend at Wesleyan and for a few years right afterwards. I never met anybody who could come close to replacing what Tommy meant to me during that time. I fondly remember my visits to your house and your entire family and I still hold many funny stories he told me during those times near and dear to my heart. A story he told me about a trip back to Michigan still stands as one of the funniest (and cleverest) things I've ever heard anyone tell me. And Mrs. Tucker I just want to add that to this day, I have never met anyone as sweet or as nice or as encouraging as you are, either. The acorn doesn't fall far from the tree. I just can't believe that that acorn and the tree that sprouted from it are now gone. With much love and sympathy, Jim Porter

To the family of Tom Tucker,

Like so many, I was fortunate to know and work for Tom for many years both at Travelers and AIG. No one had a greater impact on my career than Tom.

Through his example of integrity, discipline, decency and hard work he made me and many others better.

Throughout the 35 years I've known Tom there was always one constant. His love of his family was his core and anchor. He spoke of you often and always with a smile and deep sense of pride.

I was never more in awe than witnessing him deal with his illness these past few years. He never uttered a word of anger, always revealed a positive spirit and enjoyed robust sense of humor. Tom was unwaveringly inspirational during his most difficult challenge.

Please know that my family and I hold you close in our prayers. Know too that I am deeply grateful for his selfless example of humanity and for his friendship.

His was a life lived too short but certainly a life lived well.

May you find comfort in knowing that so many people care and were touched by Tom's life.

TO THE TUCKER FAMILY AND TO THOSE WHO KNEW OF TOM IN THEIR LIFE'S JOURNEY, I SEND MY CONDOLENCES AND TO HONOR THE MEMORY OF A VERY 'GRACIOUS AND BEAUTIFUL' MAN. I WAS TOM'S, HIS PRECIOUS and DELIGHTFUL SISTERS JACKIE & JERRY'S TRAVEL AGENT AT MCKENNA TRAVEL DURING THE 80's WHEN TOM WORKED FOR THE TRAVELERS INSURANCE CO. TOM WAS SOMEONE WHOM YOU TOTALLY ADMIRED FOR HIS ABILITY TO MAKE YOU FEEL IMPORTANT AND TOTALLY APPRECIATED. HE WAS A GIANT IN HIS EXEMPLORY PERSONALITY! THIS IS WHY I HONOR HIS MEMORY WITH WORDS THAT I WANT TO ADD AMONG OTHERS WHO ALSO HAVE ADMIRED HIM AS HE CROSSED YOUR PATH IN THE PAST. ETERNAL REST IN PARADISE NOW, TOM!!
