Janet Oberg Obituary

Janet Oberg

Aug 16, 1936 - Mar 20, 2026

Janet Oberg, 89, of Ceresco died Friday, March 20, 2026. Born August 16, 1936, in Sioux City, Iowa, Janet spent her early years in Blencoe, Iowa. Her family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where she attended Northeast High School. She had five children with her first husband, Jerry Rittenburg, and one child with her second husband, Virgil Oberg.

Janet worked in a variety of careers. She trained and worked as a dental assistant for several years, then went on to earn a college degree in 1988. At various stages, she was a homemaker and full-time stay-at-home mom, bookkeeper, office manager, retail clerk, U.S. Customs inspector, social worker, and farm wife.

Janet's avocational interests were similarly broad. She sang in church choir for much of her life and instilled a love of music in all of her children. She was a voracious reader, and enjoyed cooking, gardening, painting, and traveling. She was particularly close to her brother, Kermit, whom she lost in 2020. She loved spending time with family, especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include daughters, Terri Rittenburg, of Lincoln, Janell Cain (Ken), of Ozark, Ala., Lora Pierson (Ken), of King George, Va.; son, Dean Oberg (Cheryl), of Ceresco; and daughter-in-law, Mary Rittenburg, of Valparaiso; grandchildren, Michael Davis, Sandra Lyman (Rick), Cindy Harburn, Andrew Pierson (Jennifer), Aaron Pierson (Jennie), Malachi Rittenburg, Isaiah Rittenburg (Amber), Grace Zeck (Bailey), Kendra Schleicher (Brent), Janet Whitehurst (Chris), Dixie Campbell, and Ryan Hurst (Jodi); bonus grandchildren, Devin Smithson, Kyle Montgomery, Brittany Poe; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; nieces, Kari Bedsole (Layton) and Jamie Martin, and nephew, Kris Mobley (Teresa).

Janet was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Oberg; parents, Irwin Mobley and Jana Celli; brother and his wife, Kermit and Mary Lou Mobley; son, Kevin Rittenburg; daughter, Karin Rittenburg-Riggins; sons-in-law, Mathew Harburn and James Smithson.

Was so sorry to hear about your Mother Dean and Sheryl. Our hearts go out to you. We didn´t know your mother that much but, I do remember her making a potato salad for Ashley Montgomery´s graduation party, it was very good. She was a lovely Woman. I worked with Janet at SS in the 1990's . We became friends and we enjoyed going to lunch and dinner. She took me to the farm once and U remember the huge rosemary she raised by the house. I was amazed at how many different places she had been employed. She was so informative on so many subjects. I am so glad to say that I was a friend of hers. My sincere sympathy goes to all of her family.
