Mary Lou Gilmore

Mary Lou Gilmore, born on December 7, 1932, in Beatrice, Nebraska, to Clyde and Nellie Milke, and passed away on New Year's Day surrounded by her family. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and community member, she lived a life full of love and generosity.

In 1950, she married the boy next door, James "Jim" Gilmore, a marriage that would span decades until Jim's passing in 2000. Together they raised three children who brought her endless pride: Daniel (Ginger), Jan (Phil Baker), and Patrick (Karen). Her family continued to grow, and she was blessed with 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Mary retired in 2001 after more than 35 years as the office manager for the Nebraska Department of Roads, where she was known for her work ethic and warm personality. Her commitment to community extended beyond her career; she donated countless gallons of blood to the community blood bank, volunteered for the YWCA, and belonged to Redeemer Lutheran Church for many years. In her more active years, she enjoyed participating in volkswalks, savoring the beauty of Nebraska's trails and communities. An avid reader and listener of books, Mary had a lifelong love of learning and literature that she shared with her family.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Jim; her parents, Clyde and Nellie; and her brother, Arlen.

Mary Lou is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild, as well as her cherished "sis" Ruth Bartholomew.

There will be a Memorial Service held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Butherus Maser and Love funeral home, 4040 A St, Lincoln.

Memorials are suggested to Capital Humane Society.
