Avis Rode Thompson Hodik

Madison-Avis Rode Thompson Hodik, age 101, died peacefully on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2005, at Meriter Health Center, Madison, Wisconsin. Avis was born on May 11, 1903 in Ogdensburg, Wisconsin. She graduated from Stevens Point Normal (UW Stevens Point) and taught high school home economics until her marriage to Wallace Thompson in 1928. Wally and Avis lived and raised their children on the family farm in Ogdensburg. Wallace preceded her in death in 1972. In 1976, Avis married Frank Hodik and moved to Milwaukee where they were happily married until Frank's death in 1982. Avis continued to live in the Milwaukee area where she led a full and productive life for 15 more years. She enrolled in writing classes and enjoyed her new-found creative talent until her eyesight failed. Avis moved to Madison in 1997. She is survived by her son: David (Sally) Thompson of Madison; her daughter: Karen (Thomas) Zilavy of Madison; her grandchildren: Susan (Kevin) O'Brien, Peter Thompson, John (Melissa Pailthorp) Zilavy, Jennifer Zilavy Frey, David (Gala Miller) Zilavy; five great grandchildren, Brendan O'Brien, Olivia and Oona Zilavy and Jesse and Joelle Frey. In addition, she is survived by the families of Frank Hodik for whom she had great love and respect. Avis' family thanks the staff at Meriter Terraces and Meriter Health Center for the kind and thoughtful care provided to Avis during her stay. A memorial service to celebrate Avis' long life will be held on Friday, April 1, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at the Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, with Rev. Richard Urdahl officiating.
