Bette Schapekahm Obituary

Schapekahm, Bette Anne Bette Anne Schapekahm of Wauwatosa, passed away on June 2, 2009. She was born April 22, 1922. Bette was preceded in death by her beloved husband John, her parents Edward and Elsie Miller and her brothers, Myron and Roger. Bette is survived by her son John E. (Kristine), daughter Susan L. Gahagan, grandsons Jonathon (Jennifer) and Kurt, granddaughter Sandra Gahagan, great-granddaughter Anna, and other relatives and friends. Bette was a tireless volunteer. In her Wauwatosa Presbyterian Church, she was a past president of Presbyterian Women, served as a Deacon and was active in, and Chairperson of, several committees. She was past President of the Hawks Inn Historical Society and past Secretary of the N.S. of the DAR. She was active in the Waukesha Women's Republican Party and was a devoted member of Chi Omega Sorority. She was Neighborhood Leader and Den Mother for the Girl Scouts and was also involved with the Boy Scouts. Bette was Miss Wisconsin of 1941 and one of the five finalists at Atlantic City for the title of Miss America. She was also Miss Milwaukee Summer Festival of 1941. Bette loved to play bridge and greatly enjoyed the company of the lovely ladies she played with. Bette was able to trace her lineage back to 1575 in Chad, England. Her ancestor Elder John Strong settled with his family in Massachusetts in 1630. She was active in the National Societies of the Colonial Dames, Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonists, Colonial Wars, Pilgrims, Court of Honor, and Dames of the Seventeenth Century. Visitation Friday, June 5, at WAUWATOSA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 2366 N. 80th St., from 4:00PM until 6:30PM, followed by a Funeral Service at 6:30PM. Private interment Valhalla Memorial Park.
