As the years go by, I've slowly had to live life knowing I will have to go through all my stuggles, joys and triumphs without you. I find comfort knowing I am only a prayer away from you, but we know thats not always the same. I always think of you and I still keep your spirit alive and I boast about you all the time. Please keep smiling down on us and never leave our side as we make our way through life. I love you always sweetheart.

I miss you every day and wish you could be here to swim in the lake with Davey and I. Dear Darla,
I think about you all the time. I'll never forget how you defended and stood up for me in the face of prejudice, and how you taught me that I didn't deserve the way I got teased in school, when for a long time, I did. You taught me to stand up for myself and for others. You shared your strength with me, and now I share it with others when I defend those who are made fun of, just like you defended me.
Your example, your fiery love of life and for those you cared about and your spicy attitude are gifts you gave me that I carry with me every day, and freely share with others. I wish I could have told you how much of an impact you had on my life, and the lives of many others, even those you haven't met.
All my love,
~Jordan

MY DEAR DARLA. I AM SO SORRY I DID NOT CONTACT YOU AFTER BOOT CAMP. I CALLED A FEW TIMES AND HEARD YOUR NAME ON THE MACHINE. I WOULD HAVE NEVER GUESSED GOD WOULD HAVE TAKEN SUCH A WONDERFUL SPIRITED YOUNG LADY. IF IT WEREN'T FOR YOU I WOULD HAVE STILL BEEN LOCKED AWAY IN BASIC! YOU MADE ME SMILE AND LAUGH BEING IN THOSE DORMS. ALTHOUGH I ONLY KNEW YOU FOR THAT SHORT TIME IN BASIC TRAINING YOUR SPIRIT MADE ME FEEL LIKE I KNEW YOU OUR WHOLE LIVES. I WEEP KNOWING I WON'T GET THE CHANCE TO COME VISIT AND PARTY LIKE WE SAID WE WOULD. BUT WE DID MAKE IT AWAY FROM THOSE CRAZY DRILL INSTRUCTORS. I AM SO SORRY IT TOOK ME SO LONG TO FIND ALL THIS OUT. I WISH I COULD HAVE BEEN AT THE FUNERAL. FERNANDEZ AND I WILL BE COMING TO VISIT SOON. I'LL BRING THE PRETTIEST FLOWERS I KNOW FOR THE MOST OUT GOING BEAUTIFUL GIRL I MET IN THOSE FEW MONTHS IN BOOT CAMP. YOU ARE TRUELY MISSED. SEE YA LATER MY LIL NYMPH.

darla, you ar my sister and my best friend. if words could discribe the pain of losing you i would fill up an entire page with the depressing lyrics that my heart wont stop singing. but i still have to thank you, because of losing you i stoped and looked at my life, and realized that when you r looking down on me i dont want you to see me living my life for death, the way i was before. you have gone away, but you made me want life. i think that because of you the water is a little cooler at grandpas lake when i swim, the food mom coks tastes just a little better, because now i live for the both of us. these past months have been hard, i dont think anyone can know how much it hurts, but i try. i try to be happy when i think of you. i try to smile when i think of you. i try to laugh when i think of the crazy things that we did. my only regret now is that we wont be able to make anymore memories. you have shown me that now the only thing that matters is to love and to be loved.
p.s. happy birthday, i got you the death cab for cutie cd that you wanted, now when i play it i will always think of you and when we were driving through milwaukee and the song soul meets body came on and you wouldnt let anyone talk, because you said it was the most beautiful song you had ever herd.
i love you so much and i hope that you have found the inner peace that you so deserve.

I remember over 19 years ago, helping Pat Neff hang a sign in our dorm entrance foyer that said "WELCOME BABY DARLA"! He was so excited to show his niece off to all his college friends ! All these years later, Pat and I have remained Good friends and I have gotten to see "Baby Darla" (as I still refer to her to this day) AND Marshee grow up. "Uncle T", as they call him, still had that same excitement every time he spoke of or saw the kids. A more loving, humorous or strong relationship would be hard to find. The thing that always stood out to me about Baby Darla was her sense of humor. She and her brother certainly carried on the Neff Family Humor ! I will forever Smile when I think of Baby Darla !
To her Parents, Family, Friends and especially to Marshee... I wish you all PEACE, COMFORT and a HEART FULL OF CHERISHED MEMORIES !

Thank you to all who attended and have given their love and support during this difficult time. Please call or write me. Here is Joanne Jeske's speech she read at Darla's Funeral:
As I look around the room at all of Darla’s family and friends it reinforces the belief that it takes a village to raise a child. Each person in this room has played a part in shaping, influencing, caring for, and helping to raise David and Darla. And regardless of how well people do as the caregiver ultimately we each make our own decisions in our life. Her parents and grandparents and uncles and aunts each were positive role models, gave unlimited love and care and guidance. And so I pray that Darla’s parents - and all those who helped to raise her - know that their love and devotion was the best that any child could need. In the end, we each make our decisions and choices. We each have made hundreds of poor choices in our lives - whether it be driving in a car talking on a cell phone, speeding to get to our destination, traveling by ourselves in strange lands, participating in dangerous sports and thrills, having a few drinks with our friends and then driving home, partying when we were young and in college, or the poor choices we make everyday such as smoking, not exercising, or eating unhealthy. So far, those of us in the room have lived through our stupid mistakes and so now looking back we all have crazy stories to tell but Darla’s story will now be told by us. And I ask that it be told keeping in mind the poor choices we each have made ourselves.
Darla’s child hood companion and best friend of her youth will forever be her brother, David, who may bear the greatest burden of any of us as he will now live a changed life different then how our lives are now changed.
I feel that Darla would want her brother to now live his life for both of them. That he not feel regret by any of his words or actions or betrayal from her leaving him so abruptly and painfully but rather that he seek out those beaches, mountains, and sunsets to experience them for the two of them. That he now embrace life and the purpose of life, which is to live with happiness. That he travel for the two of them to Florida, Madrid, and Paris where Darla wanted to go. That he not be afraid of change and goals but rather that he go for all that he desires in life. That he dance and watch comedies, listen to music, and spend time with his friends. That he seeks out laughter and laughs for the two of them. Because all that he desires his sister would want him to have. I feel that she would want him to take full charge of his life with enthusiasm and purpose and find love and adventure and happiness for himself and for her.
And for the rest of us here never again will we regret having another birthday and growing old. Never again will we make jokes about getting old because Darla and others who we have lost in our lives would love to be getting old and to have another birthday.
To Darla’s parents, family, and her friends who were so important to her I want to leave you with a quote to comfort you: When you are feeling sorrow look again in your heart, and you shall see the truth. You are weeping for that which has been your delight.
Dottie Searle

I hadn't seen Darla or most of my high school friends since I moved away from Waukesha but I have many fond memories of her and I wish I could have spoken to her just one more time. When I first met Darla we were in high school spanish class. She was so full of life and had a strong, sassy attitude that I instantly fell in love with. She always made everyone around her laugh and smile and always stood up for her friends. She was the kind of friend who always had your back. There was a time when a mutual friend of ours got made fun of in the hallway and she was ready to take the guy out. He was at least 4 times her size and after she went off on him he backed off. No one messed with Darla. I will always remember that about her. I can't believe she's gone. She left us far too soon but we will never forget her. Rest in Peace Darla.

Although it has been several years since we have seen Darla, she will always be remembered as one of our best friends. Growing up with Darla and David was a lot of fun. Whether we were making up plays and performing them in our garage or having one of our many clubs that we thought were so cool back in the day. One of our favorite memories was when we pretended that we were from a planet named Quacktillia and we were all Quacktillians, we made the little girl next door hate coming over. We knew Darla since kindergaten and although we lost touch a few years ago she will always remain in our hearts. Our deepest sympathy goes toward Christine and David. Darla Neff...you will be forever missed, you were taken too soon!!!

Im just so glad to have meet such a wonderful person like Darla. She always had a smile on her face and always made everyone laugh by her jokes, and her sense of humor. We would walk home from school and it would end up to a 1-2 hour conversation at the park cause we just had so much to talk about and i would remember going home with rib pains cause all she did was make me laugh and thats whats she loved to do. She was an amazing Person and will be truley missed.

My thoughts and prayers are with Christine, David and the rest of Darla's family on this very sad occasion. I have fond memories of Darla's family trip to San Diego, her enjoyment of the sights & sounds of a new city matched only by the interest in the ever-present book she was reading!
