Edwin P. ("Ted") Wiley

Milwaukee - Edwin P. ("Ted") Wiley passed away on Friday, October 4, 2019 in his residence at Eastcastle Place in Milwaukee at the age of 89. His beloved wife and life partner, Barbara Miller Wiley, preceded him in 2014. The loving father of three sons, Edwin Miller ("Ned"), Clayton Alexander and Stephen Packard, Ted Wiley was also the proud grandfather of four grandchildren, Edwin van Zanten, Victoria, Alexandra and Elliot. The family is planning a memorial celebration for Ted, to be held later in 2020 in Milwaukee. No funeral service is planned, and in lieu of flowers, it was Ted's wish that memorial gifts in his name be made to the Blood Center Research Foundation Inc. (now the versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin: www.bcw.edu), of which he was Chairman during the period 1978-1982.

Mr. Wiley was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1929, and received his A.B. and J.D. degrees from the University of Chicago, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa; the Order of the Coif, and Editor-in-Chief of the University of Chicago Law Review from 1951-1952. Mr. Wiley started his lifelong professional career as an Associate with the law firm of Foley & Lardner, where he was made a Partner in 1960. Mr. Wiley served on the firm's Management Committee from 1985-1994, and had the strategic vision to foresee the importance of a technology law practice well before traditional law firms considered such practices. He founded Foley & Lardner's Intellectual Property Department in the 1980's. The firm also established and awards the "Ted Wiley" award for associates who exhibit outstanding client service. He was admitted to the bars of Wisconsin and Illinois, the U.S. Supreme Court; a member of the American Bar Association; the American Law Institute, the State Bar of Wisconsin; the Milwaukee Bar Association, and was a former member of the Lawyers' Committee of the Association of Bank Holding Companies where he served as Chairman from 1979-1980. Mr. Wiley was a member of the Board of Directors or the Genetic Testing Institute, Inc.; National Rivet & Manufacturing Company; The Shaler Company; Waukesha Cutting Tools, Inc.; and other closely held business and non-profit corporations and foundations. Ted, together with his wife, Barbara, were tireless supporters of many civic, artistic and charitable organizations, including the Blood Center of Southeastern Wisconsin; the Blood Center Research Foundation, Inc.; the First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee (where he served as Trustee and President of the Board); the Florentine Opera Company (where he was appointed Life Director), the Friends of the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center; the Greater Milwaukee Association of Phi Beta Kappa; the Mid-America Ballet Foundation and the Milwaukee Ballet Company; the Milwaukee Public Museum; the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra where he was appointed Honorary Director in 1997; the Pabst Theater Capital Campaign; Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin; the Tirimbina Rainforest Center, Inc.; Turner Hall Preservation, Inc.; the United Performing Arts Fund; the University of Chicago College and Law School Alumni Visiting Committees; the Wisconsin College of Music; the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music; and the Wisconsin History Foundation. The Schlitz Audubon Nature Center dedicated the Edwin P. Wiley Amphitheater in 1987; the United Performing Arts Fund awarded him the Olive Stiemke Award in 1988; he received an Alumni Public Service Citation from the University of Chicago in 1989; the Greater Milwaukee Foundation awarded him the William C. Frye Award in 2000, and a particular source of pride to Ted was the Wisconsin Governor's Award in Support of the Arts, which he received jointly with Barbara. Ted was an individual of broad intellectual interests and enjoyed the learning opportunities afforded by extensive travel throughout the United States and the world. Ted will be remembered for his exceptional intelligence, integrity and honesty, and his boundless energy and commitment to his community of choice in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He will be remembered by his children, their wives, and his grandchildren for his active involvement in their upbringing, and his undying devotion to and love of his wife.
