Eugene Lawler Obituary

Lawler, Eugene Patrick Born to Eternal Life Nov. 23, 2009 at 87 years. Gene is survived by his beloved spouse of 63 years, Joyce (nee Moorbeck); by their only daughter, Kathleen Ann; by their seven cherished sons, Patrick (Keli), Michael, Jack (Debra), Mark (Kathy Pat), Joseph, Charles (Stuart) and David (Barbara); by their treasured grandchildren, Jacob (Ylonka) Demitros, Patrick II, Kelly, Calloway, Kelsey, Kevin, Joshua and Zachary; and their darling great-granddaughter, Gloria. Gene is further survived by his sister, Kay (Walsh) and by his brother, Thomas as well as many other relatives and dear friends. Gene was a proud graduate of Marquette University High School. After serving in the North Atlantic, he earned selection to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, graduating in 1946. After the War, he began his civilian career as an engineer, moving into marketing, and opening an advertising agency in 1962 which became Hoffman York, Inc. Under his leadership, by 1981 the agency grew to be the largest in Wisconsin and he subsequently merged it with a New York firm. Gene continued to serve as Chairman and CEO until retirement in 1984 and was elected to the Board of Directors of the parent company, then the thirteenth largest agency in the world. Gene served as president of the Milwaukee Advertising Club and was awarded the Silver Medal for distinguished service by the American Advertising Federation. He also served on numerous boards, including the Godfrey Company, Marquette University College of Business Administration, Alverno College, St. Charles Boys Home, Blue Mound Country Club and Quail Creek Country Club in Naples, Florida. He also served as president of the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Men. We will remember our father as a man of exceptional faith, integrity and generosity. He was an influential force in each of our lives and continuously inspired us with his wisdom, his foresight and his professional conduct. As a husband, a father, a brother, a colleague and a friend, Dad was one-of-a-kind. Visitation on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at St. Mary's Visitation Parish, 1260 Church Street, Elm Grove from 5 PM until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 7 PM. Private burial at St. Mary's Church Cemetery, Elm Grove. Memorial contributions gratefully accepted to Marquette University High School, 3401 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee, WI 52208, the Jesuit Partnership, 3400 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53208, and to the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation, 291 Wood Rd., Annapolis, MD 21402.

To the Lawler family,
Please accept my sympathy and allow me a moment to share my memories of Gene Lawler. Mr. Lawler gave me my first job in advertising back in '78 when I was fresh out of college with a little portfolio of creative work and a big ego. He offered me an entry level position, which humbled me, taught me the ropes with a training program, then promoted me from Jr. copywriter to copywriter. I'll never forget this opportunity with a top class shop and his words of wisdom (i.e. learn to golf -- you can do it for life -- and I'm still trying)! I went on to have a very successful and enjoyable ad career as a copywriter and producer but it's at HY under his tutelage that I created my first Phyllis George script, Sentry TV spots, Amity print, Speed Queen collateral and much more. GREAT MEMORIES! Though I moved to Chicago, I am still very close with the friends I made at HY (I had to answer the phones saying " Hoffman York Baker and Johnson") and we talk about it to this day, over 30 years later! God Bless you all.

Dear Lawler Family,
Please accept my deepest sympathy. Your dad was most certainly "one-of-a-kind", a true christian family man, a gentlemen's gentleman, a pure professional with outstanding ethics and moral fortitude. He, as you all, have made me feel part of your family, I grieve with you today over this loss. I am proud to have known him. I regret I will not be able to make the services but I will be there in spirit & prayer. Peace be with you all.

KAL and Chuck, time and distance do not lessen my appreciation of your loss. My thoughts are with you, as the two Lawler family members I have known, as well as with all of your family. The beautiful obituary so well conveys who Gene Lawler was and how important he was and will continue to be for your family. I imagine the constancy of the beam emanating from a lighthouse. I imagine that unceasing light will always be there to guide you.

Dearest Lawlers,
My most sincere sympathy goes out to you today. Over the years, I have had the privilege of observing second-hand the quiet generosity and unmoving strength "Dad" displayed in leading his family. What a devoted man he was; what a legacy he leaves. You have my deepest, heartfelt sympathy.
