Garvin Smith Obituary

Smith, Garvin "Stretch" Born in Hawi, Hawaii on July 26, 1931 and gave his final Aloha on December 28, 2012, at the age of 81. Survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia "Ginny" Smith. Brother of William, Reidar, and Elwood Smith. Garvin was the proud father of Laura Smith of Neenah, WI, Dick (Debbie) Smith of Springfield, IL, Sandy Cunningham (John Lockwood) of Colgate, WI, Glen (Becky) Smith of Plymouth, WI and Charlie (Lisa) Smith of Mukwonago, WI. Further survived by his grandchildren Jamie (Chris) Popham, Andy (Stacy) Smith, Ryan Cunningham, Adam and Kalani Smith, Delaney, Tyler and Valerie Smith, great - grandchildren Maelynn and Kinlee Smith, ohana and friends in Hawaii and on the mainland. Preceded in death by his parents Bill and Jennie (Uaia) Smith and sister Marlene Costa. Garvin was a proud 1949 graduate of Kamehameha School for Boys in Honolulu, where he served as class President and made life-long friends and ohana. He graduated from Carroll College in 1953 and has been a faithful advocate for and supporter of Carroll throughout his life. He served in the US Army from 1953-1955, was employed for 38 years and retired from Textile Kraft / Tekra Corporation in New Berlin, WI. Together Garvin and Ginny raised their family in Neenah, WI and retired in Waukesha, WI. To call Stretch an avid sports fan would be an understatement. He enjoyed success as an athlete throughout the years, but his passion was both in coaching and supporting any and all sporting events. Stretch was inducted into the Carroll College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1979, and was honored in April 2012 as a Distinguished Alumnus. A memorial service for Stretch will be held in the Humphrey Memorial Chapel at Carroll University on Sunday, January 13, 2013. Visitation starts at 2 PM, with the memorial service at 3 PM and reception to follow. The family requests that you wear a Hawaiian shirt or dress if possible. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Garvin and Virginia Smith Endowed Scholarship Fund at Carroll University. Aloha 'Oe

I first met Garvin when he was calling on Mid America Tag & Label. Later when my girls attended Carroll we rarely were at a game when Garvin wasn't in the stands(usually because he was at a family members event). He took a sincere interest in all he met. The bleachers won't be the same without him.

Ginny, Glen & Charlie,
Jim and I were sad to hear about Garvin. What fun memories we have of him in the good old "Rolco" soccer days. We even had named his black Dodge Diplomat station wagon we had bought after him. He made us smile. All of you are in our thoughts and prayers.
