Jack Barwind Obituary

Barwind, Jack A., Ph.D. February 4, 1943 - May 16, 2013. Age 70, was born and raised in Milwaukee. He was a well known educator, administrator, scholar, and consultant. Jack began his career in 1969 as an Assistant Professor and Director of Graduate Studies at Cornell's School of Communication Arts. He later became Department Chair of Speech Communication at Montana State University. In 1985, he joined Syracuse University as Area Director of the Speech Communication department in the College of Visual and Performing Arts. While at Syracuse, he spent a number of semesters teaching with the Division of International Programs Abroad on their London Campus. Jack took full advantage of the London theatre and sports scene, spending significant time on the West End and at football stadia around the city. In 2001, Jack decided to leave Syracuse to pursue his international ambitions, and took a position as Assistant Dean at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. While there, he developed a serious camel collection. Jack retired in 2004, and moved with his wife, Mary Jo, to Denver, CO. to be close to his family. Even after retirement, Jack continued to teach online courses at Metropolitan State University of Denver and at Walden University. An avid reader and prolific author, Jack addressed topics from "Baseball is a Storied Game" (Take Me Out to the Ballgame: Communicating Baseball) to "Communication and the Complex Mind" (The Talk Within: Its Central Role in Communication). Jack's irreverent sense of humor was well-known, and he maintained it up until the end. He was much loved. He is survived by Mary Jo, his wife and soulmate of 44 years, their daughter Karie Jo, son Kent, son-in-law Mo, daughter-in-law Monica, and grandchildren Allie, Ty, Justin and Elyssia. Mass will be held at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Parish at 10:30AM, Friday, May 24, 2013, 6673 W Chatfield Ave., Littleton, CO 80128. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider making a donation to a cause that Jack truly believed in: childhood literacy (www.justgive.org/registries/memorial/donate/JackBarwind).

Mary Jo and family, thoughts and prayers are with you and yours. Remember the great times and the wonderful sense of humor, which I always enjoyed in my interactions with him. I know he had a very positive influence on the students he taught at cornell and they not only learned, but enjoyed learning, from him. Regards, Karen

The first Speech Communication course I ever took was with Dr. Barwind and I can honestly say I would not be where I am today (college professor of Communication Studies) without Dr. Barwind. He also treated me as if I was a serious student even when I was not. I think he saw potential where others did not and that is what made him a truly great professor and, more importantly, man.

I took 2 nite classes at SU taught by Jack and Mary Jo.
Have often thought of the comment jack made regarding the internet and how it was going to make this world smaller. How right he was. Absolutely enjoyed their classes.
