Guhl, James F., M.D.
Born to Eternal Life on Wednesday, January 23, 2008, at the age of 80 years. Survived by his loving wife, Jane (King) and children: Ann (Lance) Kaun, of Palmyra, Stephen (Lori) of Muskego, Timothy (Ann) of Andover, MN, Dr. Thomas, of New Berlin, Mary (Gregor) Owen, of Muskego and Dr. David (Dr. Amy Miller-Guhl) of Wauwatosa, a sister, Barbara Guhl of Milwaukee and seventeen grandchildren: Aileen, Benjamin, Jeana, Jessica, Daniel, Katie, Sarah, Paul, Matthew, Emily, Kevin, Elizabeth, Christina, Samuel, Frank, Jack and Joseph. Further survived by other relatives and friends.
Dr. Guhl was born in Bay View and graduated from Bay View High School in 1946. He earned a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in 1950 from Marquette University where he was a notable long distance runner on the track team. He went on to earn his medical degree from Marquette University School of Medicine in 1954. His internship at St. Joseph's Hospital in Milwaukee was followed by Orthopedic surgical residencies at Veterans Hospital Wood, Wisconsin., Loyola University - Hines Veterans Hospital, Chicago and the James Lawrence Kernan Hospital for Crippled Children, Baltimore MD. He served as a medical officer at the DeWitt Army Hospital in Aberdeen, MD, and was discharged with the rank of Captain.
He began practice as a general Orthopedic Surgeon at St. Luke's and St. Francis Hospitals but was intrigued by fiberoptics and its use in an arthroscope. He conferred with Dr. Richard O'Connor of Los Angeles and Dr. Hiroshi Ikeuchi in Japan to learn of arthroscopic techniques and principles. By the early 70's he devoted his practice full time to this innovative approach to surgery and became one of the first in the country to practice operative arthroscopy. He earned worldwide recognition for his arthroscopic surgery in foot and ankle problems holding a patent for his invention of the ankle distractor that allows surgeons to open the ankle joint for better viewing and surgical intervention.
Eager to share his work within the Orthopedic profession, Dr. Guhl embarked on a mission of world wide seminars and discussion groups in France, Austria, Italy, Spain, Korea, Brazil, Japan, Holland, Switzerland, Israel and England. He was a founding member of the International Arthroscopy Association and the Arthroscopy Association of North America. As President of the AANA he initiated the medical journal Arthroscopy and was the visionary for establishing the Learning Center of the AANA that draws surgeons worldwide to participate in seminars on techniques and innovations in arthroscopic surgery. Dr. Guhl also established a video library within the Learning Center to facilitate teaching programs.
Dr. Guhl wrote extensively on his research and techniques in arthroscopic work and in his lifetime presented 47 scientific papers as a faculty member for a like number of courses in that discipline. He wrote 20 chapters for books on arthroscopy and an author and publisher of one textbook on the pathology and surgical techniques of ankle arthroscopy and two books on foot and ankle arthroscopy. He was Chief of Orthopedics at St. Francis Hospital from 1983-1984. As a Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin he was named Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year in the Department of Orthopedics in 1995.
He was a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, International Arthroscopy Association, Arthroscopy Association of North America, American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, International Society of the Knee, American Medical Association, Milwaukee County Medical Society and the Wisconsin State Medical Society. He was also an honorary member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.
A sailing enthusiast he was a lifetime member of the South Shore Yacht Club and participated in numerous races highlighted by his first place finish in the Chicago-Mackinac race of 1972.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Dr. Guhl will be held Tuesday, January 29 at 10:00 AM, at St. Mary's Church, Elm Grove. A visitation will be held on Monday, January 28, from 4-7:00 PM at the funeral home.
